Chapter 14 - THE DIGITAL NET

Across the giant screen, hundreds of corporate documents, bank transfer logs, and encrypted text messages flickered into view.

Every pedestrian walking along the sidewalk outside stopped to stare through the glass walls. Commuters paused on the pavement, pulling out their smartphones, snapping photos of the massive public display.

"What is that?" Kane hissed, his face draining of color.

"That," Elias said, stepping up beside me, "is a public ledger of every illicit transaction Meridian Global has funneled through the Cayman Islands over the last four years. Including the payment made to Dr. Bennett’s hit-and-run driver."

Kane lunged toward the console, but Elias’s security team instantly intercepted him, pinning his arms behind his back with brutal efficiency.

"Get your hands off me!" Kane roared. "You have no authority here! This is an illegal data breach!"

"It’s not a data breach if the data was transmitted directly to our public staging server by your own compromised hardware," I said, pointing at the laptop in Jake’s hands.

Jake looked down at the flashing red screen.

The crimson countdown hadn't hit zero. Instead, the timer dissolved into a glowing Voss Fintech logo, followed by a status bar reading: *DATA EXFILTRATION COMPLETE. TRANSMITTING TO DOJ / SEC / FBI FINANCIAL CRIMES DIVISION.*

"You... you didn't trigger a self-destruct," Jake stammered, dropping the laptop onto the granite floor. The plastic cracked against the stone. "It was a trojan horse."

"Dr. Bennett knew Meridian would eventually try to crack his drive," I told them. "The decryption failure wasn't a glitch. It was an extraction protocol. The second Kane plugged that drive into Meridian’s central server, it downloaded your entire corporate internal network and mirrored it onto our cloud."

Lila fell to her knees on the cold floor, clutching her head in her hands, hyperventilating. "No, no, no... Jake, what did you do?! What did you make me do?!"

"What did *I* make you do?" Jake yelled back, turning on her with savage venom. "You’re the one who found the drive! You told me your sister was an idiot who would never notice! You said we could take the money and leave her to rot!"

"Shut up!" Lila shrieked, clawing at her own hair. "Shut up!"

"Mr. Kane," Elias said, towering over the pinned executive. "Federal agents from the Southern District of New York have just entered your headquarters on Park Avenue. Your assets have been frozen. Your board of directors is currently holding an emergency vote to strip your executive powers."

Kane stared at Elias, his eyes bulging with murderous fury. "You think you won, Voss? You think this ends here? I will bury you in litigation! I will tie this little girl up in court until she’s fifty years old!"

"You won't be doing much litigating from a maximum-security federal correctional facility," Elias replied smoothly.

The heavy glass doors of the atrium swung open once more.

A dozen armed federal agents in windbreakers bearing the letters *FBI* stormed the lobby, their weapons drawn, badges flashing in the morning light.
