Chapter 15 - HANDCUFFS AT DAWN

"FBI! Nobody move!"
The authoritative bark echoed through the vaulted atrium.
Special Agent Sarah Miller led the tactical team, her badge glinting against her navy tactical vest. Within seconds, Kane’s two bodyguards were forced to the floor, disarmed, and cuffed.
"Vincent Kane," Agent Miller said, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate espionage, wire fraud, and grand larceny."
"Do you know who my lawyers are?!" Kane spat, struggling against the agents twisting his arms behind him. "You won't make these charges stick!"
"Save it for your arraignment, Vincent," Miller replied, ratcheting the cuffs tight with a sharp, metallic *clack*. "We’ve had your offshore accounts flagged for six months. Miss Vance just handed us the cryptographic smoking gun."
Two more agents approached the floor where Lila was still curled into a sobbing ball of ruined cashmere.
"Lila Vance-Miller?" an agent asked, looking down at her.
"No! Please!" Lila cried, looking up with tears streaming down her blotched face. She crawled on her knees across the granite toward me, reaching out her manicured hands. "Maya! Maya, tell them! Tell them I’m your sister! You can't let them take me to jail! Please, Maya! I’m sorry! I’ll give back the money! I’ll annul the marriage! I’ll do whatever you want!"
I looked down at her.
This was the woman who, less than twenty-four hours ago, sat at the center of a two-hundred-guest ballroom and told the world I was born to wipe down counters.
The woman who watched our mother slap me and smiled.
"You had eleven months to apologize, Lila," I said, my voice devoid of anger, filled only with a deep, echoing emptiness. "You had eleven months to tell the truth. You only care now because the handcuffs are on your wrists."
"Maya, please!" she screamed as two female agents hauled her to her feet. "Mom! Call Mom! Tell her to help me!"
"Mom can't help you, Lila," I said quietly. "Mom’s busy figuring out how she’s going to pay her mortgage without my paychecks."
"You monster!" Lila shrieked, thrashing against the agents' grip as they dragged her toward the revolving doors. Her designer shoes dragged against the stone, leaving scuff marks. "You destroyed my life! You were always jealous of me! You ruin everything you touch!"
Jake didn't fight. He stood there, limp and pathetic, offering no resistance as an agent cuffed his hands behind his back. As they led him past me, he wouldn't even lift his eyes from the floor.
Within five minutes, the atrium was clear. The sirens wailed outside, fading into the ambient roar of the waking city.
The massive LED wall behind us stopped displaying documents, returning to the peaceful blue logo of Voss Fintech.
I stood there in the vast, empty lobby, the silence rushing back in to fill the void.
My knees suddenly buckled.
Before I could hit the floor, Elias caught me by the waist, pulling me firmly against his chest. His arms were solid, steady, a bulwark against the exhaustion that threatened to swallow me whole.
May you like
"It's over, Maya," he whispered near my ear. "It’s done."
