Chapter 18 - THE RECKONING

Forty-eight hours after the arrests, the Southern District of New York released its preliminary indictments.

Vincent Kane was charged with fifteen federal felonies, including solicitation of vehicular homicide in the death of Dr. Andrew Bennett. Meridian Global’s board ousted its entire executive committee, and their stock collapsed by seventy percent in pre-market trading.

Jake Miller accepted a plea deal: five years in federal prison in exchange for testifying against Kane and his own wife.

Lila refused the plea deal. Her court-appointed attorney stated she was suffering from "severe emotional distress" and maintained she was the real victim of an elaborate corporate setup engineered by her sister.

The judge remanded her without bail to the Metropolitan Detention Center.

On Thursday afternoon, Elias walked into the private engineering lab on the fortieth floor of Voss Fintech, where I had spent the last two days reviewing the recovered files from Dr. Bennett’s drive.

The monitors were glowing with clean, elegant lines of code—the completed, validated Voss Core-Four routing engine.

"You finished it," Elias said, standing beside my chair.

"Andrew finished it," I corrected softly. "I just closed the loops he didn't get to finish before they took him."

Elias looked at the screen, his expression softening with a profound, quiet grief. He reached out and touched the glass where Andrew’s digital signature was rendered in the software’s credits.

"He would be proud of you, Maya," Elias murmured. "He talked about you constantly, you know. In his letters to me. He said you were the rarest kind of engineer—one with infinite technical brilliance, but with an actual soul."

Tears pricked my eyes, but for the first time in years, they weren't tears of shame or exhaustion. They were tears of closure.

"What happens to the code now?" I asked.

"It gets deployed," Elias said, looking at me with total conviction. "As an open-source public utility. Just like Andrew wanted. No private equity firm will ever monopolize it. Voss Fintech will host the infrastructure, but the governance belongs to the public."

He reached into his pocket and placed a set of brass keys and an electronic keycard on the desk in front of me.

"What’s this?" I asked.

"The keycard grants you unrestricted executive access to the top three floors of this building," Elias said. "And the brass keys belong to a brownstone in Greenwich Village. It’s fully furnished, has a private courtyard, and there isn't a hot plate in sight."

I stared at the keys, my breath catching. "Elias, I can't accept this. This is too much."

May you like

"It's not a gift, Maya," he said, stepping closer, his gray eyes locking onto mine with unwavering warmth. "It’s your signing bonus. As the new Chief Technology Officer of Voss Fintech."
