Chapter 2 - FIRED ON SIGHT

The silence at the head table was suffocating.

The DJ’s music thumped in the background—some upbeat pop hit that felt violently out of place against the funeral atmosphere descending on the bridal party. Jake froze with his fork halfway to his mouth. Chloe’s smile melted into a look of sheer panic.

Lila stared at the business card sitting next to her plate. The embossed silver lettering caught the candlelight: *Elias Voss, Chief Executive Officer, Voss Capital & Technologies.*

"Mr... Mr. Voss?" Lila stammered, her voice pitching up an entire octave. "I—I had no idea you were coming. Jake said—"

"Jake said I was a friend from school," Elias interrupted smoothly. "Which was true, until I realized he helped you falsify your employment onboarding portfolio."

"No! That’s a misunderstanding!" Lila jumped to her feet, knocking her half-empty champagne glass over. The pale liquid seeped into the pristine white tablecloth, spreading like a venomous stain. "I wrote that architecture! Maya just... she just helped me clean up some formatting! She’s my sister, she does little clerical favors for me!"

"Formatting?" Elias stood up. He was six-foot-two, broad-shouldered, and radiated an authority that made the groomsmen instinctively shrink back. "The Voss Core-Four framework is a zero-latency algorithmic trading pipeline. It solves a data concurrency bottleneck that our senior staff engineers spent eight months failing to crack."

He took one step toward her. Lila stepped backward, nearly tripping over the train of her four-thousand-dollar gown.

"You claimed that architecture during your six-month review," Elias said, his voice deadly quiet. "You accepted an eighty-thousand-dollar performance bonus and a promotion to Senior Product Manager based on that patent-pending repository."

"I earned that!" Lila shrieked, her bridal poise shattering into hysterics. "I managed the project!"

"You committed corporate fraud," Elias corrected. "And as of right now, your employment with Voss Fintech is terminated for gross ethical misconduct and intellectual property theft."

"You can't fire me at my own wedding!" Lila screamed. Her face was bright scarlet, tears of pure rage pooling in her eyes. "This is my day! Jake, say something! Tell him he can't do this!"

Jake opened his mouth, but nothing came out. He looked down at his lap, sweating profusely in his collar.

"Human Resources and our legal counsel have already been notified," Elias said, adjusting the cuffs of his shirt without breaking eye contact. "An audit of your corporate accounts began twenty minutes ago. I suggest you retain an attorney, Mrs. Miller."

Elias turned on his heel. He didn't look at the gaping guests. He didn't look at the horrified in-laws.

He walked straight toward me.

I stood there frozen, still holding that absurd tray of shrimp cocktails, my heart pounding so hard against my ribs I thought it would crack them.

Elias stopped six inches from me. The cold, ruthless edge in his expression softened by an imperceptible fraction.

May you like

"Put the tray down, Maya," he said softly. "You're done serving these people."
