Chapter 3 - THE GOLDEN CHILD’S COLLAPSE

"Don't you dare touch her!"

My mother’s voice pierced the stunned ballroom before I could even process Elias’s words. Helen Vance tore across the dance floor, her mother-of-the-bride lavender gown rustling aggressively as she shoved herself between Elias and me.

"Who do you think you are, coming into my daughter’s wedding and causing a scene?" Mom hissed, her face contorted with fury. "Lila has worked eighty hours a week for your company! She poured her soul into that job while this one"—she swung around and glared at me with absolute contempt—"has done nothing but leech off our family!"

"Mom, please," I whispered, the shame burning hot in my throat. "Don't do this here."

"Shut your mouth, Maya!" she snapped, loud enough for sixty wedding guests to hear. "You planned this, didn't you? You couldn't stand seeing your sister happy for once in your miserable life! You’ve been jealous of Lila since the day she was born, and now you bring this... this tyrant in here to ruin her wedding day?"

"Helen, stop," my father, Richard, muttered, jogging up behind her, looking mortified. "Let’s take this outside—"

"We are not taking anything outside!" Lila wailed, storming over, her veil lopsided. "She ruined my life, Dad! She gave this man access to my private files! She hacked my system because she’s a bitter, pathetic loser who couldn't cut it in the industry!"

I stared at my sister. The sister who had called me sobbing at two in the morning six months ago, crying that she was going to get fired because she didn't understand the tech stack her new team was using. The sister who begged me on her knees to "look over" her repository.

*“Please, Maya,”* she had wept in my tiny apartment, eating the takeout I bought with my tip money. *“Just write the core logic. You know this stuff in your sleep. If I get this promotion, I can finally help you out. We’ll be a team.”*

I spent seventy-two straight hours without sleep, drinking stale coffee, building a proprietary concurrent routing protocol from scratch, and handing it to her on a silver platter.

And now, she was looking me in the eye and calling me a thief.

"I didn't hack anything, Lila," I said, my voice shaking but clear. "You asked me for that code."

"I never asked you for anything!" Lila screamed, tears ruining her contour. "You gave me broken notes and I had to rewrite the entire thing myself! You're a barista, Maya! You don't know the first thing about high-frequency fintech architecture!"

Elias let out a short, cold laugh that cut her off instantly.

"Mrs. Vance," Elias said, addressing my mother, though his eyes never left Lila. "Your daughter didn't rewrite a single line. The repository was committed under a hidden cryptographic key tied to Maya Vance’s personal hardware signature. Every single mathematical proof in that engine belongs to her."

He looked around the opulent ballroom—the crystal chandeliers, the imported orchids, the seven-tier cake.

"And unless I am severely mistaken," Elias added, his voice dropping into a dangerous rumble, "the bonus money used to pay for this absurd spectacle was stolen directly from her intellectual property."

Lila’s eyes widened in sheer terror. She reached out to Jake, but Jake pulled his arm away.

"Is that true, Lila?" Jake muttered under his breath, his voice cracking. "You said that bonus was from your quarterly sales commission."

"Jake, shut up!" Lila snarled.

"No, don't shut up," Elias said smoothly. He pulled a slim leather folder from under his arm—a file I hadn't noticed him holding when he arrived. "Because the bonus isn't the only thing being audited. As of 4:00 p.m. today, forensic accountants discovered that over four hundred thousand dollars in vendor routing payments were diverted to an offshore shell account registered under the name *L. Vance LLC*."

Lila went bone-white. She swayed on her high heels, her fingers clutching at the nearest chair for balance.

May you like

"Four hundred thousand?" my father repeated, his jaw dropping. "Lila... what is he talking about?"
