Chapter 15 - The Viper’s Nest

Rain had begun to lash the Maine coastline by nightfall, turning the asphalt of the old commercial fishing piers into slick mirrors reflecting the yellow halos of sodium streetlamps. The smell of rotting fish, diesel exhaust, and stagnant tide hung thick in the air.
Pier 42 was derelict, its wooden pilings groaned under the surging black water. Moored at the far end of the dock sat a sixty-foot luxury ocean yacht, the *Aegis*, its hull completely matte-black, running without navigation lights.
Inside an idling, unmarked black SUV parked behind a stack of rusted shipping containers, Claire adjusted the strap of her Kevlar vest under her oversized woolen coat. Her face was pale in the dashboard glow, but her hands were steady as she loaded a sleek, compact semi-automatic pistol—the weapon Daniel had spent three months teaching her to shoot on their private range.
"You don't go down there alone, Claire," Daniel warned from the driver’s seat. He was wearing tactical gear, his ear-piece blinking with an encrypted channel linking him to a six-man private security squad staging behind the warehouse. "Evelyn is unhinged. She knows she’s looking at thirty years in federal prison if she gets caught. She has nothing left to lose."
"Evelyn thinks I'm coming to beg," Claire replied, her voice completely devoid of fear. "She thinks I'm the same trembling, pregnant woman who collapsed in the corridor outside Room 302. She thinks Arthur is in the back of this SUV."
Claire reached into the rear footwell, pulling up a heavy, thermal baby carrier wrapped in thick blankets. Inside was not Arthur—who was currently fifty miles inland, heavily guarded in a subterranean bank vault safe-house under Margaret’s watchful eye—but a localized military-grade signal jammer rigged to a GPS beacon.
"Give me five minutes to get onto the main deck," Claire said, checking the feed on her smartwatch. "Once I confirm Ryan is onboard, you cut the dock's primary power and breach from the stern."
"Claire—"
"He looked me in the eyes, Daniel," Claire interrupted, her gaze locking onto his with terrifying intensity. "He held my belly while I was vomiting from the synthetic hormones they slipped into my prenatal vitamins, and he told me I was going to be an amazing mother. I am finishing this tonight."
Without another word, Claire stepped out into the freezing deluge.
The rain soaked through her hair within seconds, plastering dark strands across her face. She carried the heavy baby carrier in her left arm, keeping her right hand hidden deep inside her coat pocket, her fingers wrapped around the checkered grip of the pistol.
She walked up the swaying aluminum gangway of the yacht. The metal clanged sharply under her boots.
The sliding glass doors of the main salon slid open with a whisper of pneumatic pressure.
Warm, dry air scented with expensive bourbon and Cuban cigar smoke poured out into the storm. Standing inside the lavish, teak-lined salon, dressed in a pristine beige cashmere trench coat, was Dr. Evelyn Reed. In her right hand was a silver martini glass; in her left, a nickel-plated .38 revolver.
"Right on time, Claire," Evelyn purred, stepping aside to let Claire enter. "I always admired your punctuality. Even when you were tracking Ryan's fraudulent credit card receipts, you were so dreadfully efficient."
Claire stepped inside, setting the heavy, blanketed carrier down onto the low marble coffee table between two leather sofas.
"Where is Ryan, Evelyn?" Claire asked, her voice flat, ignoring the weapon pointed at her chest.
Evelyn chuckled, a dry, grating sound that betrayed the manic twitch in her left eyelid. "Recovering in the lower stateroom. The prison transport guard had to break two of his ribs to make the extraction look convincing to the state troopers. But don't worry... his surgeon is already waiting in international waters."
Evelyn took a step toward the carrier, reaching down to peel back the blue cashmere blanket. "Now, let’s see the little boy who is going to buy us our new lives in Buenos Aires—"
Evelyn ripped the blanket back.
Her smile vanished. Her eyes widened in absolute shock as she stared at the flashing red LED diodes of the military jammer.
"What is this?" Evelyn hissed, spinning around, raising the revolver.
"It's a wake-up call," Claire whispered.

Before Evelyn could pull the trigger, Claire lunged forward, grabbing Evelyn’s wrist and driving her entire body weight into the doctor’s chest.
