Chapter 16 - The Red Sea of Deceit

The gunshot was deafening inside the enclosed cabin. The bullet tore through the ceiling paneling, showering fiberglass and sparks over the marble floor.

Claire didn't hesitate. Months of rage, trauma, and maternal protective instinct transformed into raw, explosive violence. She twisted Evelyn’s wrist downward, slamming it against the edge of the heavy marble table until bone cracked with a sickening snap. The revolver clattered to the deck.

Evelyn screamed, a shrill, animal shriek, clawing at Claire’s eyes with manicured nails. "You bitch! You ruined everything! We were supposed to rule that hospital! Ryan was supposed to be mine!"

Claire drove her elbow directly into Evelyn’s jaw, knocking the blonde doctor violently onto the leather cushions. Evelyn’s lip split, blood smearing across her porcelain veneers, her eyes rolling in concussive daze.

"Ryan never loved you, Evelyn," Claire said, standing over her, her pistol aimed directly between Evelyn’s eyes. "To him, you were just a licensed pair of hands willing to forge death certificates. You were his cleaning lady."

Suddenly, the salon’s interior lights snapped off. Red emergency strips along the baseboards pulsed to life as the yacht’s engines roared, the floorboards vibrating violently beneath them.

The yacht was moving.

"Claire!" Daniel’s voice crackled through her hidden earpiece, fractured by static. "The dock lines were rigged with explosive release pins! Someone in the engine room just punched the throttles—they’re hauling out into the bay!"

"I'm on board," Claire said into her collar mic, her eyes darting toward the narrow staircase leading down to the lower berths. "Evelyn is neutralized. I'm going down for Ryan."

"Claire, wait for backup! The Coast Guard cutter is six minutes out!"

Claire didn't answer. She pulled Evelyn’s silk scarf from her neck, bound the doctor’s broken wrists behind her back with brutal efficiency, and kicked the dropped revolver across the floor into a vent.

She moved toward the staircase, descending into the belly of the vessel.

The air below was thick with the reek of medical-grade antiseptic, rubbing alcohol, and fresh copper. The yacht had been gutted; where luxury guest cabins should have been, there stood a fully functional, mobile surgical theater. Operating lights swung from the reinforced ceiling beams. An anesthesia machine hissed steadily in the corner.

And lying strapped to an adjustable stainless-steel surgical bed in the center of the room was Ryan Vance.

He looked unrecognizable. Gone was the pristine, perfectly groomed corporate raider who had once mocked her in the restaurant. His face was pale, his eyes sunken and yellow with advancing liver and bone marrow failure. An intravenous line dripped amber liquid directly into a central catheter in his neck.

When he saw Claire step into the doorway, his bloodshot eyes widened with a mixture of terror and desperate hope.

"Claire..." he croaked, coughing violently as pink foam bubbled at the corners of his lips. "Claire... thank God... you brought him... you brought Arthur..."

Claire walked slowly toward the operating table, her boots clicking ominously against the drainage tiles. She looked down at the man who had vowed before God and their families to love and cherish her.

"Arthur isn't here, Ryan," Claire said quietly.

Ryan’s face twisted into a mask of pure panic. He strained against the leather restraints holding his wrists to the bed frame. "No... no, Claire, listen to me! I'm dying! The marrow... my cells are collapsing! If I don't get the transfusion within forty-eight hours, my organs will shut down! Tell me where you hid him!"

Claire raised the barrel of the pistol and pressed it firmly against the plastic intravenous line running into his neck.

"Tell me who paid you, Ryan," Claire whispered. "Tell me who owns Sub-Basement B-2."
