Chapter 6 - Bloodline and Counterfeit Love

Down on the third floor, locked inside a sterile administrative interrogation annex, Nurse Vanessa Cole sat curled on a vinyl chair, her blonde hair tangled, her mascara smeared in black, muddy tracks down her face.

The door opened, and Detective Miller walked in, carrying a thick manila folder. Behind her came Head Nurse Margaret, who held the tablet that had dismantled Vanessa’s life in a matter of minutes.

Vanessa scrambled to her feet, clutching the edge of the metal table. "Did Ryan clear this up? Where is he? He told me his lawyer would have me out of here before the shift ended!"

Detective Miller pulled out a chair and sat down slowly, dropping the manila folder onto the table with a heavy, ominous *THUD.*

"Mr. Vance is currently in holding cell number three at the Central Precinct," Detective Miller said, opening the folder. "And his lawyer just abandoned him to save his own skin."

Vanessa froze, her face draining of what little color remained. "What?"

"Ryan Vance has rolled on you, Vanessa," Detective Miller lied smoothly, utilizing a classic interrogation tactic with masterclass execution. "He claims you approached him six months ago with a scheme to embezzle from the hospital foundation. He claims you forged his signature on the surrogacy forms, that you stole the compound medications from the surgical pharmacy, and that you acted entirely on your own out of jealousy because he refused to leave his wife for you."

"THAT LYING, SPINELESS BASTARD!" Vanessa shrieked, slamming her fists onto the table.

Her manicured composure completely vanished, replaced by the hysterical rage of someone who realized they had traded their entire future for a mirage.

"He came to me!" Vanessa screamed, hyperventilating. "He started coming to the clinic five months ago, bringing me expensive lattes, buying me diamond earrings! He took me to the Four Seasons in Chicago for a medical conference! He told me Claire was emotionally abusive, that she trapped him with an IVF pregnancy he never wanted! He swore to me that if I helped him alter the registration records, we would take the baby to his private estate in the Bahamas and raise him together!"

Margaret shook her head, her expression a mix of pity and profound disgust. "Did you really think a man who would murder his pregnant wife for money would ever stay faithful to a clinic nurse, Vanessa? Look at this."

Margaret tapped the tablet and turned it toward Vanessa.

On the screen was a flight manifest retrieved from Ryan’s private email account via an emergency search warrant.

It was a reservation for a private Gulfstream charter departing tomorrow evening at 8:00 PM from the city’s executive airport.

Destination: Zurich, Switzerland.

Passenger list: *Ryan Vance.*

One seat. One passenger. No companion. No infant.

"He was liquidating his offshore crypto accounts through a Swiss intermediary," Detective Miller explained coldly. "He never had any intention of taking you to the Bahamas, Vanessa. He wasn't even going to take the baby. The surrogacy paperwork wasn't meant to make you a mother. It was designed to create a massive legal labyrinth between Claire’s estate and her surviving family, giving him enough time to wire fifteen million dollars to an untraceable bank in the Cayman Islands and board that private jet to Zurich."

Vanessa stared at the flight manifest. The single name—*Ryan Vance*—seemed to burn into her retinas.

"He... he was leaving me behind," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "He was going to leave me here to face the police alone."

"You were his patsy, Vanessa," Margaret said softly. "You had the hospital login credentials. You had access to the pharmacy. If Claire had died of placental abruption this afternoon, every digital fingerprint on that syringe and on the terminal led directly to you. Ryan would have played the grieving, heartbroken widower, sued the hospital for malpractice, collected his millions, and left you to spend the rest of your life in a state penitentiary for second-degree murder."

Vanessa covered her face with her hands and began to wail—a wretched, animalistic sound that echoed off the cold tiles of the interrogation room.

"I have the text messages," Vanessa wept, looking up at Detective Miller with desperate, pleading eyes. "Every single one. He sent them via Signal, but I backed up the encrypted chat logs to my private cloud drive. The instructions for the medication... the PDFs of the forged signatures... the promises he made. I’ll give you everything. Just please... please don't let me go down for attempted murder. Please!"

Detective Miller pulled a legal pad toward her and clicked her pen.

"Start from the beginning, Vanessa," the detective said. "And don't leave out a single word."
