Chapter 2 - The Audit on the Glass Screen

The corridor seemed to plunge into sub-zero temperatures.
"Altered... my baby’s records?" Claire’s voice sounded thin, like dry leaves scraping across concrete. She looked from Margaret to Ryan. "What does that mean? What did she alter?"
Ryan’s face, which had been flushed with righteous anger just moments before, underwent a ghastly transformation. The blood drained from his cheeks in a sweeping, ghostly wave. His pupils contracted into tiny pinpricks. He didn't look at Claire. He didn't look at Daniel. His panicked gaze darted straight toward the glass emergency exit doors at the end of the hall.
Daniel saw the shift immediately. He stepped sideways, blocking the narrow corridor, his muscular arms crossing over his chest. "You move an inch, Ryan, and I’ll break your other jaw."
"This is an administrative misunderstanding!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice pitching up into a shrill, manic squeal. "The system updated last night! The IT department warned us about glitches in the Epic database! Margaret, you can't accuse me of clinical tampering based on an algorithm flag!"
"Shut up, Vanessa," Margaret said, her tone devoid of emotion. "I didn't rely on an algorithm flag. Our department server triggered a Level-4 Security Audit thirty minutes ago when someone attempted to permanently lock and reassign the Primary Maternal Identity Tag on Patient File #884-Claire-Vance."
Margaret stepped closer to Claire, tapping the heavy glass screen of the tablet. She brought up an audit trail—a cascading waterfall of timestamps, digital employee signatures, and encrypted override commands.
"Every keystroke made in this building is logged with biometric ID," Margaret explained, her voice steady and implacable. "At 1:14 PM today, while Claire was sitting in the ground-floor laboratory having her glucose screening blood drawn, your hospital account—registered under terminal ID #OB-Nurse-4—accessed her master maternity file."
Margaret scrolled down. Bright red warning banners flashed across the administrative interface.
"You initiated an administrative status change," Margaret continued, looking at Vanessa with absolute disgust. "You filed an emergency Addendum of Surrogacy Designation. You attempted to scrub Claire’s name as the biological mother, classifying her as an 'Uncompensated Gestational Carrier,' while designating yourself, Vanessa Cole, as the 'Intended Legal Mother and Custodial Guardian' upon delivery."
Claire stopped breathing.
A suffocating, crushing weight dropped onto her chest. Her mind struggled to comprehend the words. *Gestational carrier? Intended legal mother?*
"No..." Claire whispered, her voice cracking. "No, no, no... that’s impossible. This is my baby. I went through three rounds of IVF! I took the hormone injections! I felt him kick! I’m seven months pregnant! How could anyone... how could you even write that?!"
Daniel’s jaw clenched so hard the muscles jumped beneath his skin. "You tried to steal her baby on paper?"
"It’s not theft if it’s legally binding!" Vanessa blurted out, her composure completely shattering under the weight of the evidence. But the moment the words escaped her lips, she clapped her hand over her mouth, realizing the fatal admission she had just made.
Ryan let out a low, venomous curse. "Vanessa, you idiot! Keep your mouth shut!"
"So you *did* know," Daniel hissed, turning on Ryan like a predator closing in on wounded prey. "You sick bastard. You were in on this."
"I don't know what she's talking about!" Ryan stammered, backing up against the wall, his hands held up defensively. "Claire, listen to me. Vanessa is obsessed with me! She’s mentally unstable! She’s been stalking our family for months! She must have done this out of some twisted delusion to force herself into our lives! I didn't know anything about this! You have to believe me!"
"Liar!" Vanessa screamed, pointing a trembling, manicured finger at Ryan. Her eyes were bloodshot, wild with the desperation of someone realizing they were being thrown under the bus. "You coward! You told me it was all set up! You told me the trust fund couldn't be touched unless the baby was legally registered under our names! You gave me your lawyer's paperwork this morning!"
Claire felt the room spin. Nausea, hot and violent, surged up from her stomach into her throat.
*Trust fund.*
The words echoed in her ears like a death knell.
Claire’s late father, Arthur Vance, had been an industrial titan who had built an empire in commercial logistics. When he died two years ago from sudden cardiac arrest, he had left a multi-million-dollar estate. But Arthur had never fully trusted Ryan’s flash-in-the-pan financial schemes. Consequently, the family trust had been locked down with an ironclad stipulation: eighty percent of Arthur’s liquid assets—over fifteen million dollars—was tied directly to Claire's first biological child, accessible only through a trustee structure once the child was born.
If Claire died, or was legally stripped of maternal rights due to incapacitation, the sole guardianship—and the sole control of that fifteen-million-dollar trust—would pass to the surviving father and his legally designated domestic co-guardian.
"The trust fund..." Claire whispered, the horrifying realization assembling like pieces of a grotesque jigsaw puzzle in her mind. "Ryan... you didn't just want an affair. You wanted my father's money."
Ryan didn't answer. His face had gone completely expressionless—a mask of cold, calculating sociopathy that Claire had never seen in all their years together.
"Margaret," Claire choked out, gripping the nurse’s wrist with desperate strength. "What else? You said there was something else we needed to verify before delivery. What else did she change in my records?"
Head Nurse Margaret didn't immediately answer. She looked down at the tablet, her eyes darkening with an emotion that looked terrifyingly like dread. She glanced toward the security guards, signaling them to move closer to Vanessa.
"Claire," Margaret said, her voice dropping to a somber whisper. "The administrative surrogacy switch was only the legal cover. What frightened our automated audit system... what triggered the internal emergency response... was a clinical change in your medical charts."
Margaret turned the tablet toward Claire.
On the screen was Claire’s blood profile. Under the clinical blood analysis section, someone had entered a manual override on Claire’s blood type and Rh-factor.
Claire was O-negative. A rare, delicate blood type that required specific, hyper-vigilant care during pregnancy to prevent hemolytic disease of the newborn.
On the screen, highlighted in glowing crimson text, Claire’s blood type had been manually altered to AB-positive. And scheduled for her appointment that very afternoon was an order for an intramuscular injection of an incompatible immunological blocker—a dose that, if administered to an O-negative pregnant woman carrying an Rh-positive baby, would induce massive placental abruption and fatal anaphylactic shock within forty-eight hours.
"My God," Daniel whispered, reading the screen over Claire’s shoulder. "They weren't just trying to take the baby."
Daniel looked up, his eyes burning with lethal intent.
