Chapter 18 - The Patriarch’s Scalpel

"Lower the weapon, my dear Claire," Dr. Sterling said calmly, adjusting his cufflinks. "A bullet of that caliber inside a yacht’s lower deck has an alarming tendency to ricochet off the bulkheads. It would be dreadfully tragic if you survived all of Ryan's clumsy incompetence only to kill yourself with a stray round."
Claire didn't lower the gun. Her sights remained centered squarely on the bridge of the old man’s nose. "You. You were the ghost signature on Arthur’s transfer forms."
"I am the architect, child," Sterling replied smoothly, stepping into the room with an elegance that defied his seventy-five years. Behind him stood two men in black tactical gear, their submachine guns aimed directly at Claire’s chest. "Ryan was always an impatient, vulgar boy. Incapable of long-term strategic patience. He panicked when you saw him with Evelyn in the hospital corridor. If he had simply played the loving husband for two more weeks, the delivery would have been handled smoothly, the paperwork filed quietly, and our offshore clinic in Geneva would have secured the biological assets without a single whisper to the Department of Justice."
"Margaret trusted you," Claire said, trying to buy time, praying that Daniel and the Coast Guard had intercepted the yacht’s trajectory.
Sterling chuckled softly, a dry, aristocratic sound. "Margaret is a romantic fool. She spent forty years cleaning bedpans and believing in the sanctity of Florence Nightingale’s oath. She never understood that the elite do not abide by the biological limitations of common peasants. The world is run by men who require longevity to maintain global order. What is the life of one infant compared to the stability of an economic empire?"
"He's not an asset," Claire hissed, her knuckles turning bone-white on the grip. "He's my son."
"He was an asset the moment you conceived him," Sterling replied, raising his cane slightly. "Now, drop the weapon. You will provide the location where my sister has hidden the boy. If you do, I will ensure Ryan’s surgical team removes your son’s marrow under full anesthesia. He will live a comfortable life in our private medical sanctuary in the Swiss Alps. Refuse... and my men will throw you overboard with twenty pounds of anchor chain around your ankles, and we will find the boy anyway."
"You won't find him," Claire said, a terrifying smile spreading across her lips.
Sterling frowned, his calm slipping for the first time. "And why is that?"
"Because that jammer on the top deck didn't just block your communications," Claire whispered. "It sent an encrypted transponder ping to the United States Navy radar station at Cape Elizabeth every three seconds."
Suddenly, the night sky outside the portholes exploded into blinding, artificial daylight.
The deafening, concussive thrum of twin turboshaft engines rattled the steel hull. Through the reinforced portholes, the black water churned white as a massive Sikorsky MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter dropped out of the storm clouds, hovering barely thirty feet above the yacht’s main deck.
A voice bellowed over a military-grade loudspeaker, shaking the vessel to its iron core:
