Chapter 20 - Ashes on the Atlantic

The helicopter hoist cable whipped violently in the gale-force winds as Claire was hauled upward through the blinding sea spray. Daniel held her tight against his tactical harness, shielding her face from the rotor wash. Below them, Dr. Jonathan Sterling was being winched up in a secondary rescue basket by two armed federal marshals, his snow-white hair soaked, his eyes glaring up at Claire with venomous, impotent rage.

Fifty feet below, the yacht *Aegis* was in its final death throes.

The matte-black stern rose high into the air, its massive propellers spinning uselessly in the rain. Trapped inside the sinking steel tomb, beneath the shattered glass of the main salon, the emergency lights flickered one last time before extinguishing completely. With a massive, groaning gasp of escaping air and rupturing bulkheads, the vessel plunged beneath the black waves of the Atlantic, swallowed whole by the deep.

Ryan Vance, and whatever secrets were buried inside his diseased marrow, vanished into the abyss.

Two hours later, the helicopter touched down on the tarmac of the Portland Coast Guard Air Station.

Ambulances, FBI tactical vans, and state police cruisers sat with flashing blue and red emergency bars, casting a surreal, cinematic glow across the wet asphalt. Margaret was already waiting near the hangar doors, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, holding little Arthur tightly in her arms.

The moment Claire’s boots touched the ground, she broke into a run.

She collapsed onto her knees on the rain-slicked concrete, burying her face into her son’s chest. Arthur blinked sleepily, his tiny hands reaching out to clutch her damp hair, letting out a soft, confused coo that broke the dam inside Claire’s soul. She wept—great, shuddering sobs of pure, unadulterated release.

"He's safe, Claire," Margaret whispered, tears streaming down her own weathered cheeks. "My brother... is he..."

"In federal custody," Daniel said, walking up behind them, his face smeared with soot, his body aching from the breach. "The FBI has already executed simultaneous search warrants on St. Jude’s administrative tower and the Vance Family Foundation headquarters in Boston. The entire network is being unsealed."

Claire stood up slowly, lifting Arthur into her arms. She looked across the tarmac, where Dr. Jonathan Sterling was being pushed into the back of an armored FBI prisoner transport vehicle.

Before the heavy steel doors slammed shut, Sterling caught Claire’s eye.

He didn't look defeated. He tilted his head, his lips curling into a cold, terrifying smile that sent a shiver straight down Claire’s spine. He raised his cuffed hands and tapped his index finger against his wristwatch.

A silent promise.

Daniel noticed the gesture. He stepped closer to Claire, resting his hand firmly on the small of her back. "It's over, Claire. The Vance line is extinct. The foundation is seized."

Claire looked down at her baby boy, whose wide, innocent brown eyes stared up at the swirling rain clouds above.

"It's not over, Daniel," Claire murmured, her voice steady, hardened by the horrors she had survived. "Ryan was just a pawn. Sterling was just a manager. Men like that don't build empires alone."
