But alive.
Daniel Cross was arrested inside.
Cross immediately requested an attorney.
Pierce had heard him making calls.
One sentence mattered.
“Calder says clean everything before Washington arrives.”
That statement was not enough by itself.
But Cross’s phone contained encrypted communications.
Messages linked Calder directly to Pike.
The conspiracy was no longer speculation.
General Calder was suspended.
Pike attempted to leave the country.
Federal agents arrested him at Dulles International Airport.
For the first time, Lena believed the worst might finally be over.
Then Pierce told her what Cross had whispered before agents entered the warehouse.
“You think Calder is important?”
Cross had laughed.
“He's just another man trying to survive.”
Lena asked Pierce what he meant.
Pierce shook his head.
