Chapter 3 - The Colonel’s Hidden Gamble“You knew Vaughn might attack me.”

Lena’s voice was controlled.
That frightened Hale more than shouting would have.
“I knew escalation was possible.”
“You put me there anyway.”
“I placed investigators inside the mess hall.”
“They watched me hit the floor.”
Hale had no defense.
The truth was worse.
He had believed controlled danger was necessary to expose Rourke’s network.
Lena had agreed to remain visible.
But she had never agreed to become bait.
Hale admitted it.
“I failed you.”
The admission did not repair her bruised arm.
It did not erase the laughter.
But it mattered.
Then Pierce interrupted.
“There’s something else.”
He reopened his phone.
One encrypted file contained a photograph of Rourke standing outside a warehouse near the southern training range.
The timestamp was two nights before Ruiz’s accident.
Beside him stood Vaughn.
And a third man.
Captain Nolan Briggs.
The officer responsible for vehicle maintenance records.
Hale stared at the photograph.
“Ruiz’s accident involved a vehicle.”
Pierce nodded.
“The steering assembly failed.”
Lena felt cold.
A harassment investigation had suddenly become something far darker.
If the vehicle had been sabotaged, they were no longer investigating intimidation.
They were investigating an attempt to seriously injure a soldier.
Possibly kill him.
Hale immediately contacted Army investigators outside Fort Halbrook.
He also placed himself on temporary administrative leave.
Lena was surprised.
“You’re stepping down?”
“I crossed a line.”
“But Rourke will use that against you.”
“He should.”
Hale looked at her.
“Accountability doesn't become optional because the other man did something worse.”
That evening, investigators sealed Rourke’s office.
Briggs disappeared before they reached his quarters.
His truck was found abandoned near Interstate 85.
The driver's door was unlocked.
His phone remained inside.
His wallet did not.
By midnight, Fort Halbrook was under a quiet internal lockdown.
Then Lena received a message from an unknown number.
YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED AT YOUR TABLE.
Attached was a photograph.
It showed Lena entering her apartment building.
Taken less than an hour earlier.
May you like
Someone was watching her.
And Rourke was already in custody.
