Chapter 4 - Someone Outside The GateMilitary police moved Lena into temporary protective housing.

She hated it.
The room looked like every government apartment ever designed.
Beige walls.
Cheap furniture.
A refrigerator that hummed too loudly.
Two armed investigators waited outside.
Yet Lena could not sleep.
At 2:13 a.m., her phone vibrated.
Another message.
YOU THINK ROURKE WAS THE TOP?
She stared at the screen.
A second message arrived.
HE TOOK ORDERS TOO.
Lena immediately photographed the messages using an investigator’s device.
Cyber specialists traced the number.
Burner phone.
Purchased in Georgia.
Activated that afternoon.
Pierce was questioned again.
He denied knowing who was sending the threats.
Lena believed him.
Then he remembered something.
Vaughn once mentioned “the Colonel above the colonel.”
At the time Pierce assumed he was joking.
Hale was not amused.
Fort Halbrook answered to Brigadier General Thomas Calder through the regional command structure.
Calder had visited the installation repeatedly.
More troublingly, he had personally signed Ruiz’s discharge paperwork.
Investigators checked the dates.
Ruiz’s appeal had been rejected forty-eight hours after Pierce submitted evidence against Vaughn.
The approval carried Calder’s digital signature.
Suddenly the conspiracy extended far beyond one mess hall.
Outside the installation, television vans began arriving.
A leaked video of Vaughn kicking Lena’s table had reached social media.
Millions watched it.
The clip ended with Lena unfolding the complaint.
America saw a bullied private standing against a larger soldier.
What America did not see was everything beneath it.
Then a national reporter received an anonymous package.
Inside were copies of seventeen suppressed complaints.
Every one came from Fort Halbrook.
Every one had disappeared.
May you like
And at the bottom of the package was a handwritten sentence.
ASK WHAT HAPPENED TO MATEO RUIZ.
