Chapter 9 - Ghost Inside The SystemCyber investigators traced the dead soldier’s credentials.

Someone had been using inactive accounts for years.

Every time a complaint needed to disappear, the system showed activity from personnel who had retired, transferred, or died.

The pattern was brilliant.

And terrifying.

It made every deletion look disconnected.

Then they found the administrator who had authority to reactivate those accounts.

Chief Warrant Officer Daniel Cross.

Cross had served quietly at Fort Halbrook for twelve years.

No complaints.

No disciplinary history.

No obvious connection to Vaughn.

When investigators arrived at his house, his family was gone.

His garage was empty.

But his computer remained running.

On the screen was an unfinished deletion command.

Thousands of files were scheduled to vanish.

Investigators stopped it with seconds remaining.

Among those files were payment records.

Money from Pike’s defense contractor had moved through consulting companies and eventually reached accounts linked to Cross, Briggs and Rourke.

The amounts were enormous.

Now the motive became clearer.

Certain soldiers had reported procurement irregularities.

Others had witnessed misconduct.

Some simply became inconvenient.

The complaint system identified them.

Rourke intimidated them.

Vaughn frightened them.

Cross erased their paperwork.

Briggs manipulated assignments.

And Pike protected the operation from outside.

But one question remained.

Who protected Pike?
