Chapter 5 - The Soldier Who Came BackMateo Ruiz returned to Fort Halbrook wearing civilian clothes and a black wrist brace.

Pierce waited outside the investigation building.
Ruiz saw him.
Neither man moved.
“I’m sorry,” Pierce said.
Ruiz walked past him.
Inside, Ruiz described months of harassment.
Vaughn had threatened him.
Rourke had pressured him.
Briggs had ordered him to drive a vehicle Ruiz believed was unsafe.
When Ruiz objected, Briggs signed the inspection himself.
Twenty minutes later, the steering failed.
The truck rolled down an embankment.
Ruiz survived because it struck a tree.
Investigators showed him the warehouse photograph.
Ruiz stared at Briggs.
Then Rourke.
Finally, the third vehicle parked behind them.
He recognized it.
“That belongs to General Calder’s driver.”
The room became silent.
That did not prove Calder had been present.
But it was enough to widen the investigation.
Ruiz later found Pierce outside.
“You knew I was scared.”
Pierce nodded.
“And you still laughed with them.”
“Yes.”
Ruiz struck him.
Pierce stumbled backward.
He did not retaliate.
Ruiz’s eyes filled with tears.
“I needed one person to believe me.”
Pierce whispered, “I did.”
“No.”
Ruiz pointed toward the building.
“You believed the evidence.”
His voice cracked.
“I needed you to believe me before I had evidence.”
Then he walked away.
Lena had watched from across the parking lot.
Pierce wiped blood from his lip.
“I deserved that.”
“No.”
Lena approached him.
“You deserved accountability.”
She looked toward Ruiz.
“Pain isn't the same thing.”
Pierce absorbed the distinction.
That night, investigators found Captain Briggs.
He was hiding in a motel outside Atlanta.
And what they discovered in his room changed the investigation again.
A flash drive.
Cash.
A passport.

And a printed photograph of Lena Mercer.
Across her face, someone had drawn a red X.
