Chapter 1 - THE PLATEThe dinner table looked perfect.

That was the cruelest part.
Fine china gleamed beneath the chandelier. Crystal glasses reflected the warm golden light. Diane Carter's famous roast sat untouched in the center of the table, surrounded by expensive side dishes arranged with the precision of a magazine photograph.
Outside, the Texas night was dark and still.
Inside, everything was about to explode.
Twenty minutes earlier, I had been sitting beside my ten-year-old daughter, Lily, pretending everything was normal.
Then Richard Carter, Ryan's father, lifted his wineglass.
"Emily," he said casually, "we missed you and Lily on the family cruise last month. Everything all right?"
I looked at Lily.
She had asked me every day why she hadn't been allowed to go.
I'd lied every day.
Not anymore.
"Ryan emptied our savings account," I said.
Silence.
Ryan slowly turned toward me.
His expression changed first.
Then his eyes.
"You promised you wouldn't talk about that."
"You took forty thousand dollars," I said. "Most of it was my mother's inheritance. Money meant for Lily."
Diane sighed.
"Emily, you're being dramatic. You're married. What's yours is his."
"No."
My voice trembled.
"But what's mine isn't automatically his."
Ryan stood.
The chair scraped violently across the floor.
"Maybe if you learned when to keep your mouth shut—"
The plate came flying.
I ducked.
It struck my shoulder and exploded against the wall.
Fragments of porcelain scattered across the floor.
Lily screamed.
Nobody moved.
Nobody except Ryan.
He stood there breathing hard.
Then he looked at me as if I were the one who had ruined dinner.
"Look what you made me do."
Something inside me went completely still.
I reached into my purse.
Ryan laughed.
"What are you going to do? Call the police?"
I looked him directly in the eye.
"No."
My thumb pressed the call button.
"I'm calling my father."
Ryan's smile disappeared.
Immediately.
May you like
Completely.
Like someone had switched off a light.
