Chapter 5 - THE TRUTH AT 3 A.M.Dad's house was small.

Warm.

Safe.

It smelled like cinnamon, coffee, and old books.

Lily fell asleep after hot chocolate.

I stayed awake.

I told Dad everything.

The first time Ryan pushed me.

The insults.

The isolation.

The lies.

The way he'd slowly convinced me that I couldn't trust anyone except him.

And finally—

"My inheritance."

Dad stared at the table.

"Ryan didn't lose the forty thousand."

I looked up.

"What?"

"He invested it."

"In his company."

Then Dad showed me the documents.

The money hadn't disappeared.

It had been transferred into assets connected to the shares Ryan had signed over.

Dad had protected the money.

Protected me.

Protected Lily.

But there was more.

Ryan's family company was collapsing.

Badly.

And my father was about to take control.

"Tomorrow," he said, "we audit everything."

That night, Lily slept beside me.

For the first time in six years, I didn't lock the bedroom door.

I finally closed my eyes.

At 3:07 a.m., my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

YOU THINK YOUR FATHER CAN PROTECT YOU FOREVER?

A second message arrived.

BRING BACK WHAT'S MINE. OR LILY WILL LEARN WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU CROSS ME.

My blood turned cold.

Dad read the messages.

May you like

His expression hardened.

"Now," he said, "we know what we're dealing with."
