Chapter 2 - THE VOICE ON THE PHONE"Dad?"

The word nearly broke apart in my throat.
He answered on the first ring.
"Emily?"
Six years.
Six years since I'd heard that voice.
Six years since Ryan had convinced me that my father wanted nothing to do with me.
I swallowed.
"I need you to come get Lily and me."
A pause.
Then his voice changed.
"Did that boy hurt you?"
I looked at Ryan.
His face had gone pale.
"Yes."
My father's breathing became quiet.
Controlled.
"Put me on speaker."
I did.
"Ryan Carter," Dad said.
Ryan froze.
Richard slowly stood.
"How does he know my name?"
Dad continued.
"And how does your family explain the company you've been hiding for the last decade?"
Nobody spoke.
Then Dad said something that made Richard's face drain of color.
"The investment company."
Ryan gripped the back of his chair.
Dad knew.
But that wasn't the worst part.
"Emily," he said, "before you leave that house, there's something you need to know."
My heart began pounding.
May you like
"What?"
"Who actually owns the house you're standing in."
