Chapter 18 - THE LETTER FROM THE PASTYears later, another letter arrived.

From Ryan.

He wasn't asking for forgiveness.

He wasn't asking to come home.

He simply wrote that he was proud of Lily.

That he was grateful I'd allowed him to know her.

That he had finally understood something.

Love was not ownership.

Love was responsibility.

I folded the letter.

Then I placed it in a drawer.

Not because I needed it.

Because Lily might want it someday.

That evening, she sat beside me.

"Are you okay?"

I smiled.

"I'm happy."

She leaned against my shoulder.

"Me too."

Outside, Mark was teaching Thomas how to ride a bicycle.

Dad was yelling instructions nobody had asked for.

The yard was full of laughter.

I watched them and realized something.

My life wasn't perfect.

It was better.

Perfect had never been the goal.

May you like

Peace was.

And I'd found it.
