Chapter 19 - THE NIGHT I FINALLY UNDERSTOODYears after that dinner, I returned to the old Carter house.

The property had changed hands.
The giant dining room was empty.
The chandelier was gone.
The walls had been repainted.
I stood there alone for a moment.
I remembered the plate.
The shattered porcelain.
Lily's frightened face.
Ryan's cold eyes.
And my father's voice coming through the phone.
Then I smiled.
That night had once been the worst night of my life.
But it had also been the night my life began again.
I realized something standing there:
Sometimes the moment that destroys the life you thought you wanted is the exact moment that saves the life you were meant to have.
I walked outside.
The Texas sunset burned orange across the horizon.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Lily.
Mom, we're waiting for you. Dinner's getting cold.
I laughed.
Dinner.
The word no longer frightened me.
I drove home.
To my husband.
My children.
My father.
May you like
My family.
My life.
