Chapter 11 - Five YearsThe sentencing hearing came two weeks later.

I spoke first.

“When Diane dropped my son, she didn't only hurt his body. She destroyed our sense of safety.”

Ryan followed.

“I spent my entire life trying to make my mother proud.”

His voice broke.

“Nothing was ever enough.”

Then he looked directly at Diane.

“But I'm not that little boy anymore.”

Sarah spoke.

Then Lily.

The courtroom became completely silent.

Lily looked at Diane.

“I used to be afraid of you.”

She paused.

“But I'm not afraid anymore.”

The judge sentenced Diane to five years in state prison, with additional restrictions after release.

When the gavel fell, Ryan reached for my hand.

We held on.

Justice hadn't erased the pain.
