Chapter 13 - The LetterWe moved into a new house.

Four bedrooms.

A backyard.

A tree swing.

A fresh beginning.

Then, one afternoon, a letter arrived from prison.

From Diane.

Ryan opened it.

She admitted what she'd done.

She wrote that she had begun therapy.

She wrote that she finally understood how much damage she had caused.

She didn't ask for forgiveness.

She didn't ask to come home.

She simply apologized.

Ryan read the letter twice.

“Do you believe her?” I asked.

He shook his head.

“I don't know.”

He walked to the sink.

Lit a match.

The paper slowly turned to ash.

“Whether she's sincere or not doesn't change our future.”

I watched the ashes fall.

For the first time, I realized something.

Forgiveness wasn't required for freedom.

Sometimes freedom simply meant refusing to carry someone else's darkness.
