Chapter 6 - The Family HistoryOne evening, Sarah arrived carrying a box of old journals.

“They belonged to Mom.”

We read them.

Page after page revealed the same pattern.

Ryan being mocked for crying.

Sarah being controlled.

Children being punished for having feelings.

Every mistake treated like a personal betrayal.

Ryan eventually closed the journal.

“She never wanted children.”

He wiped his eyes.

“She wanted people she could control.”

I put my hand over his.

“And you're going to be different.”

He looked toward Noah's room.

“I have to be.”

Later that night, he knelt beside Lily.

“I promise you something.”

She looked at him.

“You will never have to earn our love.”

Lily started crying.

Then she hugged him.
