Chapter 10 - THE TRUTH ABOUT HIS FATHERThe truth was more complicated than any of them expected.

Graham's father had discovered Helena had been hiding serious financial problems.
She had secretly borrowed against family assets.
She had also been using Corinne's name in several transactions.
Her husband wanted to expose it.
He planned to leave.
But before he could—
he suffered the heart attack.
There was no evidence Helena had caused his death.
But there was evidence she had destroyed his final letter.
The letter Graham had just found was only a copy.
His father had tried to tell him everything.
Helena had hidden it.
Why?
Because she believed that if Graham knew, he would hate her.
And she couldn't bear losing another person.
Graham sat silently.
Maren held his hand.
Helena cried for the first time.
“I thought if I kept you close, you wouldn't leave.”
Graham looked at her.
“You didn't keep me close.”
His voice was barely audible.
“You taught me to run.”
Helena broke down.
Maren watched them from across the room.
For years, she had imagined Helena as a monster.
But now she saw something different.
A damaged woman who had made terrible choices because she was terrified of abandonment.
Understanding her did not excuse her.

But it explained her.
And sometimes understanding was the first step toward breaking a cycle.
