Chapter 19 - GRACE'S FIRST STEPSGrace took her first steps in Helena's garden.

Everyone was there.
Graham crouched several feet away.
“Come on, sweetheart.”
Grace stood unsteadily.
Maren held her breath.
One step.
Then another.
Then another.
Grace fell into her father's arms.
Everyone cheered.
Graham laughed.
Maren cried.
Helena covered her mouth.
Corinne smiled.
For one beautiful moment, nobody remembered the dinner.
Nobody remembered the plates.
Nobody remembered the cruelty.
They were simply a family watching a child learn to walk.
Later, Graham stood beside Maren beneath the trees.
“Do you ever think about that night?”
“All the time.”
“Do you regret coming?”
Maren looked at him.
“No.”
He looked surprised.
“Why?”
“Because if I hadn't gone that night, you might never have discovered the truth.”
Graham smiled.
“You realize that's a very strange way to look at a terrible dinner.”
“I know.”
She rested her head against his shoulder.
“But sometimes the worst nights open doors we didn't know existed.”
Graham kissed her forehead.
Behind them, Grace laughed.
Maren turned.
Her daughter was reaching toward the sunset.
And for the first time, Maren knew with certainty that the cycle had ended.
