Chapter 20 - THE DOOR THAT WAS STILL OPENFive years later, Maren stood in the doorway of Grace's bedroom.

Her daughter was asleep beneath a pile of blankets.

Graham stood beside the window.

“You're staring again,” Maren whispered.

“At what?”

“Her.”

He smiled.

“I still can't believe she's ours.”

Maren walked over.

“She'll be starting school soon.”

“I know.”

He sighed dramatically.

“I'm not ready.”

Maren laughed.

Neither of them was.

Life had become quieter.

Not perfect.

But real.

Helena visited on Sundays.

Corinne and Maren had developed a cautious friendship.

Matthew remained the quiet peacemaker.

And Graham had learned something he once believed impossible:

He could love his family without being controlled by them.

That night, after everyone had gone to sleep, Graham returned to the study.

He opened the old box containing his father's letters.

At the bottom was one envelope he had never opened.

There was no date.

Only his name.

Graham.

He hesitated.

Then opened it.

Inside was a single page.

His father's handwriting was unmistakable.

The first sentence made Graham stop breathing.

“If you're reading this, then you finally know enough to understand that the story didn't end with me.”

Graham read the next line.

Then the next.

His face slowly changed.

Maren appeared in the doorway.

“What is it?”

Graham looked up.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he smiled.

Not a frightened smile.

Not the smile of a wounded boy.

The smile of a man who had finally made peace with the past.

“There may be one more chapter.”

Maren walked toward him.

“What kind of chapter?”

Graham folded the letter carefully.

“I don't know yet.”

She looked at the envelope.

“Is it bad?”

He shook his head.

“Not necessarily.”

Maren smiled.

“Then we'll face it together.”

Graham reached for her hand.

Outside, the first light of morning was beginning to touch the windows.

Behind them, their daughter slept peacefully.

Ahead of them was another mystery.

Another road.

Another choice.

But this time, neither of them was afraid.

Because they had learned the most important lesson of all:

You cannot choose the family you are born into.

But you can choose the family you build.

Graham kissed Maren's forehead.

She leaned against him.

And somewhere beyond the quiet house, the future was already waiting.

The door was open.

May you like

And this time—

they would walk through it together.
