Chapter 14 - A NEW HOUSE, A NEW RULEMonths passed.

Maren and Graham moved into a new home.

Not because they were running away.

Because they wanted a place where their daughter would grow up without fear.

Their home wasn't enormous.

It didn't have crystal chandeliers.

It didn't have staff.

It had sunlight.

Warm wooden floors.

Photographs on the walls.

A nursery filled with soft colors.

And laughter.

Graham changed too.

He started therapy.

He learned to say no.

He learned that boundaries were not betrayal.

Maren learned something too.

She didn't have to earn a place in someone's family by enduring disrespect.

One Sunday afternoon, Corinne arrived with Paige.

Paige carried a small stuffed rabbit.

“For Grace.”

Maren smiled.

“Thank you.”

Paige looked embarrassed.

“I’m sorry about that dinner.”

Maren crouched carefully.

“You were a kid.”

“But I laughed.”

Maren touched her shoulder.

“And now you know better.”

Paige nodded.

Graham watched from the kitchen.

The scene was ordinary.

Almost painfully ordinary.

And that was what made it beautiful.

For years, his family had confused love with obligation.

Now they were learning that love was a choice.

Every day.

Again and again.
