Chapter 16 - THE WOMAN IN THE PHOTOGRAPHGraham showed the photograph to Maren.

A young woman stood beside his father.

She looked familiar.

“Who is she?”

“I don't know.”

They searched old records.

Eventually they found her name.

Evelyn Carter.

She had worked for Graham's father.

She had also been the person who witnessed his final conversation with Helena.

Graham tracked her down.

Evelyn was elderly now.

When Graham showed her the photograph, she became silent.

Then she said:

“Your father wanted to tell you the truth.”

“What truth?”

“That he didn't leave your mother because of another woman.”

Graham stared.

“He planned to leave because he discovered what she had done.”

“We know.”

“No.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“You don't.”

She revealed that Graham's father had arranged a trust for his son.

A trust that would become accessible when Graham turned thirty-five.

But Helena had fought to control it.

Graham was now thirty-four.

Three months away.

Maren looked at him.

“Why would she hide that?”

Evelyn smiled sadly.

“Because your father wasn't only leaving your mother.”

“He was leaving something for you.”

That night, Graham couldn't sleep.

Neither could Maren.

Their lives had finally become peaceful.
