Chapter 11 - The Shadow on the Porch

The golden light of the late afternoon faded into a bruised purple twilight over the orchard, but the fragile peace Lena had fought so hard to build was shattered by a single knock. It was not the tentative tap of a neighbor or the hurried bang of a courier; it was three deliberate, heavy strikes that vibrated through the floorboards of the farmhouse.

Lena instinctively positioned herself between the front door and the small living area where Oliver was showing Grace how to stack wooden blocks. Rachel was already on her feet, a kitchen knife held low and concealed behind her wrist, her eyes narrowing as she stepped beside Lena.

"Stay with the children," Rachel whispered, her jaw set with the same lethal focus she had possessed the night she tackled the security guards at the masquerade ball.

Lena shook her head. "Together."

Lena pulled the heavy oak door open just an inch, the brass chain pulled taut. Outside, the porch was empty, swept clean by the autumn wind—save for a polished mahogany box sitting dead center on the welcome mat. Atop the box rested a white camellia flower, identical to the ones Vivian Sterling had woven into Lena’s hair before she dragged her across the marble floor of the ballroom.

Rachel bypassed the chain, kicking the door wide as she scanned the tree line. "Whoever brought it is gone."

Lena knelt, her fingers trembling despite herself as she lifted the lid of the box. Inside, resting on velvet, was not a bomb or an insult, but Daniel’s silver signet ring—the one he was allegedly wearing the night his car plummeted off the cliff. Beneath the ring lay a handwritten note in ink that was still faintly damp:
