Chapter 39 - Blood on the Crystal Chandelier

Lena’s mind snapped back to the beginning.
The masquerade ball. Arthur dragging Rachel. Lena fighting her way across the marble floor. The crash of the golden harp shattering against the floorboards, exposing the locked chest.
*The harp.*
Daniel had designed the locking mechanism for the yacht, the pod, and the subterranean vault using the same acoustic resonance frequency. The harp wasn't an ornament. It was an override.
"Rachel! The glass dome!" Lena screamed.
Before Evelyn Vance could react, Lena pivoted her rifle upward and unleashed a continuous, armor-piercing burst directly into the structural support cables holding the massive, multi-ton crystal chandelier suspended beneath the glass fountain dome directly above them.
The heavy steel cables whipped and snapped with the sound of cracking gunshots.
Evelyn looked up, her face draining of all color as thousands of pounds of leaded crystal, brass framing, and fountain water collapsed toward the vault.
"No!" Evelyn shrieked, dropping the syringe and diving toward the console.
Rachel surged forward with the speed of a striking predator. She tackled Evelyn Vance to the ground, pinning the matriarch beneath her, her hands wrapping around the woman's throat. "This is for Daniel!" Rachel roared, slamming Evelyn’s head against the steel floor.
Above them, the chandelier crashed through the glass vault ceiling in an apocalyptic explosion of glittering shards, crushing iron, and torrents of cascading water.
Lena threw her body over Oliver, shielding the boy as razor-sharp glass and shattered crystals rained down around them like frozen shrapnel. A heavy brass support rod struck Lena’s back, sending a blinding bolt of white agony through her spine, but she held her ground, locking the child in her arms until the roaring collapse subsided.
Silence fell, broken only by the torrential rush of water pouring from the shattered fountain above into the flooded chamber.
Rachel rose from the wreckage, gasping for air, her clothes soaked and torn. Evelyn Vance lay motionless beneath a twisted beam of gilded brass, her eyes wide and blank, staring up at the water cascading from the ceiling.
Oliver slowly wriggled out from under Lena’s protective grasp. Water dripped from his dark hair. His clothes were soaked.
He walked calmly to the smoking, half-crushed mainframe console.
The screen was flickering violently:
*CRITICAL STRUCTURAL DAMAGE. FAILSAFE ACTIVATED. ENTER SECOND KEY TO PURGE ALL DATA, OR OVERRIDE TO BROADCAST.*
Oliver pulled the second silver key from his pocket.
"Oliver, wait!" Lena groaned, struggling to her feet, clutching her bruised ribs. "What happens if you turn it?"
"If I purge it, the Syndicate stays in the shadows forever," Oliver said, his voice entirely clear, his violet-gray eyes reflecting the flashing red warning text. "If I broadcast it... every government in the world gets the names. But it broadcasts my location. They will never stop hunting us, Aunt Lena."
Rachel walked over, placing a trembling, bloodied hand on her son's shoulder. "We are already hunted, Oliver. But we are done hiding in chests."
Oliver looked at his mother. Then he nodded.
May you like
He inserted the second key and twisted it hard to the right.
