Chapter 12 - The Whispering Safe

The kitchen table became a war room by midnight. The curtains were drawn tight, the heavy bolt locked, and Grace slept soundly in her crib upstairs under the watchful eye of a hired security guard Rachel trusted with her life. Oliver, however, refused to sleep. He sat curled on the sofa, clutching his small blue blanket, his enormous eyes fixed on Daniel's signet ring.

"He had two keys," Oliver said quietly, breaking the silence that hung over the maps and legal documents Rachel had spread across the table.

Lena looked up immediately, kneeling beside the seven-year-old. "What did you say, sweetheart?"

"In the dark room. When the bad men locked me in the box with the harp," Oliver whispered, his small fingers tracing the engraving of the lion crest on the ring. "Daddy pressed this ring against the side of the wooden pedestal. It made a clicking sound. He said, 'If they take me, Oliver, you only give the lion to Lena. Never to Vivian. Never to the man with the gray cane.'"

Rachel froze, her hands flattening against the table. "The golden harp wasn't just an instrument. It was a transport vessel."

"A safe," Lena breathed, horror and realization colliding in her chest. "The night of the gala, Vivian wasn't just throwing a tantrum to humiliate me because I was pregnant with Daniel's child. She was trying to break open the harp in public to destroy the evidence before probate court could seize it!"

"And when Oliver came tumbling out of that false bottom instead of paper documents," Rachel added grimly, "Vivian panicked. But who is the man with the gray cane?"

Before Oliver could answer, the security phone on the counter buzzed violently. A text message lit up the screen from an unknown number: *The Metropolitan Museum just acquired the restored harp. Auction begins at dawn.*
