Chapter 29 - The Confession on the Open Sea

A grapple hook slammed into the steel window frame, followed instantly by a figure swinging into the salon through the raging rain and shattered glass.

It was Rachel.

Her flannel shirt was scorched, her skin streaked with ash and dried blood, her hair wild and whip-lashed by the storm. She didn't drop to the floor; she collided directly with Senator Vance, tackling the seventy-year-old politician into the walnut desk with the ferocity of a wounded lioness.

Vance’s pistol discharged wildly into the ceiling before flying out of his hand, skittering across the floor. Rachel drove her elbow into Vance’s nose, shattering cartilage, before snatching the fallen weapon from the rug.

"Rachel!" Lena screamed in shock and euphoria.

"I told you I was hard to kill!" Rachel roared, blood running from a deep gash above her eyebrow as she leveled Vance's gun directly at Vivian’s face.

Vivian shrieked, dropping to her knees, throwing her diamond-clad hands over her head. "Don't shoot! Please, don't shoot! It was Montgomery’s idea! He forced me!"

Albright didn't panic. With terrifying speed, the judge lunged for a concealed compartment beneath his desk, pulling out a snub-nosed .357 Magnum.

"Fools!" Albright snarled, raising the weapon. "You'll drown with this ship!"

*BANG! BANG!*

Two gunshots echoed through the shattered salon, but they didn't come from Albright, Rachel, or Lena.

The judge froze, his eyes widening in shock. He looked down at his chest, where two neat, dark holes blossomed across his silk robe. The heavy revolver slipped from his numb fingers, clattering onto the desk.

Standing in the shattered doorway, leaning heavily against the brass frame with an assault rifle resting on his hip, was Daniel Sterling. Standing right beside him was Oliver, clutching the small silver key in his fist.

Albright coughed, blood bubbling at the corner of his mouth as he slumped back into his leather chair. His gray eyes stared at Daniel in disbelief. "You... you were supposed to die at sea..."

"I was born at sea, Montgomery," Daniel said coldly, stepping into the room. "And this is where your reign ends."

Oliver walked forward, completely ignoring the bleeding bodies of Vance and Albright. He walked straight to the ornate red-lacquered door behind the judge’s desk—the door matching the key in his hand.

The boy inserted the silver key into the hidden keyhole beneath the molding. With a heavy, satisfying click, the panel popped open, revealing an ultra-secure military-grade satellite uplink terminal, displaying an open international encrypted broadcast.

The screen was live.

On the digital monitor, hundreds of legal, financial, and governmental agency seals were flashing red. The terminal had been recording every single word spoken in the salon since Lena had kicked the door open, broadcasting the audio and video stream across an unhackable naval frequency directly to the International Criminal Court in The Hague and the Pentagon's Inspector General.

"The silver key wasn't to a safe," Oliver whispered, looking up at his father. "It was the broadcasting key. You told me never to forget where it went."

Daniel smiled weakly, resting his hand on his son’s shoulder. "Good boy, Oliver. You remembered."

Senator Vance, groaning on the floor with a broken nose, looked up at the flashing terminal and let out a broken, pathetic sob. "It’s over... it’s all over..."

Vivian crawled toward Rachel’s boots, weeping hysterically. "Rachel, please... I’m your family! We share the same blood! Don't let them send me to prison!"

Rachel looked down at the woman who had dragged her across the masquerade floor, the woman who had tried to murder her unborn child for money.

Rachel slowly lowered the gun, her face setting into cold, untouchable disgust. "You aren't family, Vivian. You're just a monster wearing an expensive dress."

Suddenly, the deafening scream of a ship-wide proximity siren tore through the salon.
