Chapter 25 - Blood Beneath the Floorboards

Daniel descended the spiral staircase with agonizing slowness, his boots clanging against the iron treads until he reached the stone ground. The moment his feet touched the floor, he fell to one knee, wrapping his uninjured arm around Oliver, pulling the boy against his chest in a desperate, trembling embrace. Oliver buried his small hands into his father's jacket, sobbing softly—a release of terror he had kept locked behind stoic silence for weeks.

Daniel kissed the boy’s wet forehead repeatedly, whispering broken apologies before turning his gaze to Rachel. He looked down at baby Grace, sleeping peacefully against Lena’s chest.

"She has your eyes, Rachel," Daniel choked out, his voice thick with unspilled tears. "I never thought I'd live to see her."

"Save the reunion for when we’re not surrounded by hitmen," Rachel said, though her eyes were shining with unshed tears. "Who built the harp, Daniel? What did Miller mean about the Syndicate?"

Daniel pulled himself up, using the wooden crate for support. The pain etched into his features went far deeper than physical wounds.

"Arthur was never the head of the family empire," Daniel said, his tone turning ice-cold. "My father was just the public face, the charismatic frontman who laundered the money through real estate and private foundations. The real power behind the Sterling name belongs to a shadow cabal known as the Seventh Board—a private consortium of old-money dynasties, corrupt federal judges, and defense contractors."

Lena stared at him. "And the masquerade ball?"

"It wasn't a party, Lena. It was an auction," Daniel revealed, his eyes burning with fury. "Every year, the Board gathers behind masks. They don't bid on art or diamonds. They bid on identities, offshore sovereign trusts, and human collateral. Oliver was supposed to be the prize. His legal trust contains the blind routing numbers for forty billion dollars in untraceable offshore assets. They needed him dead on paper, but alive under a new identity, locked in an unmonitored facility where his thumbprint could authorize wire transfers for the next twenty years."

Lena felt a chill grip her soul. "The golden harp wasn't an ornament. It was a transport cage."

"Built specifically to shield human biometric heat signatures from customs scanners," Daniel confirmed. "The man who designed it—the man who engineered the false bottom and the sound-dampening velvet lining—is the Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court: Judge Montgomery Albright."

Rachel’s blood ran cold. "Albright? The man handling Vivian’s indictment right now?"

"Vivian isn't in a holding cell, Rachel," Daniel said bitterly. "Albright dismissed her charges two hours ago behind closed doors. They orchestrated Arthur’s arrest to make the world think the scandal was over. Right now, Vivian and Albright are boarding a private superyacht docked at the private deep-water pier five miles from here. They have the international clearance codes. If they leave territorial waters, Oliver’s legal existence will be permanently erased by federal decree, and Grace will be registered as a deceased ward of the state."

A deafening crack of thunder shook the lighthouse, but this time, it was followed by the shatter of glass from the lantern room far above.

"They're on the roof," Daniel hissed, pulling a compact submachine gun from behind the crate with his good hand. "Albright sent his personal security detachment to clean up the lighthouse. We can't hold this tower."

"Where do we go?" Lena demanded, checking the perimeter doors.

Daniel pointed down at the stone floorboards beneath the crate. "The lighthouse was built over a sea cave used by rumrunners during Prohibition. There’s a pneumatic launch chute that leads directly into the cove where my Zodiac boat is hidden. But someone has to stay up here to operate the manual steam winch from the catwalk, or the cave gate won't open."

Rachel stepped forward, cocking her stolen pistol. "I'm staying."

"Rachel, no!" Lena grabbed her sister’s arm. "You're a mother now! You take Grace and Oliver!"

"You're the only one who can navigate the coastal shoals, Lena, you grew up on these waters," Rachel said firmly, her voice steady and resolute. "Take Daniel. Get my daughter and Oliver to that yacht. You stop Albright from reaching international waters. I will buy you the time to launch."

"Rachel, you'll die up here!" Lena cried.

May you like

Rachel looked at her sister with an intensity that burned through the shadows. "I took a beating in that ballroom, Lena. I was dragged across the floor by my hair, and I swore to God I would never let anyone threaten my family again. Now open that hatch and get my baby out of here!"
