Chapter 19 - The Truth in Black Ink

Federal marshals instantly moved in, restraining Arthur Sterling as he lunged forward with a roar of fury. Vivian dropped to her knees, sobbing hysterical curses as the handcuffs clicked tightly around her wrists.

Lena pulled the leather-bound ledger from the harp's compartment. She flipped open the yellowed pages under the flashing red strobe of the alarm lights.

The handwriting was Daniel’s—frantic, precise, and drenched in regret.

*May 14th: I found Lena. Not because of my father's orders, but because I had to warn her. My father killed her mother when she refused to launder the offshore syndicate funds. He made it look like she abandoned her daughters. I cannot undo what my family did to Rachel and Lena, but I can burn the empire to the ground.*

*Oliver is not my biological child. He is the son of Marcus Vance, the whistleblower my father executed three years ago. If you are reading this, Lena, it means I failed to make it to the border. The boy’s real name is Samuel Vance. The drive contains the proof to seize every asset the Sterlings ever owned and return them to the victims' families.*

Lena held the book against her chest, tears burning her eyes as the weight of Daniel’s ghost finally shifted from suspicion to tragic clarity. He hadn't used her. He had sacrificed himself trying to shield three innocent lives from the monster who raised him.

"Take them away," Lena said to the marshals, her voice cutting through the wail of sirens.
