Chapter 36 - The Grand Ball at the Plaza

Midnight in Manhattan was suffocating. While the city slept beneath torrential rain, the fifth-floor ballroom of the historic Plaza Hotel was ablaze with gold leaf, crystalline light, and the sinister decadence of the global elite.
It was an exact, grotesque recreation of the masquerade ball from that fateful night.
Billionaires, foreign dignitaries, and shadow syndicate commanders mingled beneath colossal crystal chandeliers, their faces obscured behind elaborate porcelain and gold-leaf masks. A string quartet played a haunting, minor-key waltz on an elevated balcony. At the center of the ballroom floor, placed upon a black velvet dais, stood a newly forged golden harp—an arrogant monument to the power that had crushed Rachel and stolen Oliver.
Lena stepped through the gilded entrance doors.
She wore a backless emerald-green evening gown stolen from a high-end boutique in Soho, the heavy silk masking the Kevlar vest beneath. Her dark hair was swept into an intricate updo, pinned with heavy silver chopsticks that doubled as throwing blades. Over her face was a black velvet mask edged in cracked silver. In her right hand, hidden within the folds of her gown, rested a suppressed pistol.
Behind her, disguised as an elite private security escort in an immaculate black tuxedo and gold-tinted shades, walked Marcus—Daniel’s former contact, a man who owed Daniel his life.
"Target sighted at the high table," Marcus whispered through an encrypted earpiece. "Eighty yards out. That’s the Black Council. Six members. And look who’s sitting in the center chair."
Lena adjusted her gaze across the sea of spinning, masked dancers.
Her breath caught in her throat.
Sitting at the center of the VIP dais, surrounded by armed operatives, was not a stranger.
It was a woman.
She wore a gown of pure, spun gold and a mask shaped like a weeping angel. When she lifted her champagne glass, Lena saw the burn scars twisting along her left forearm—scars from the very fire that had supposedly destroyed the Vance estate years ago.
"Evelyn Vance," Lena murmured into her mic. "Arthur’s mother. The architect."
"Victor lied to us," Marcus growled. "Victor didn't run the syndicate. Evelyn did. She sacrificed her own son, Arthur, to bring down the law enforcement heat, waiting for Oliver to be brought directly to her."
Suddenly, the music stopped.
The string quartet lowered their bows in unison. A heavy, suffocating silence swept over the two hundred masked guests.
Evelyn Vance stood up from her gilded chair. She removed her weeping-angel mask, revealing a face of cold, sculpted marble and calculating gray eyes. She tapped her champagne flute with a silver spoon.
"Honored guests of the Circle," Evelyn’s voice rang through the ballroom with absolute authority. "Tonight, the Vance lineage is restored. The vault has returned to Manhattan."
Two heavy oak doors behind the dais swung open.
Flanked by two mercenaries in formal dress uniforms, Rachel was dragged into the light, her hands bound in iron cuffs. And walking beside her, holding a velvet pillow upon which rested the twin silver keys, was seven-year-old Oliver.

Lena’s heart slammed against her ribs. *The Brooklyn safehouse had been breached.*
