Chapter 1 - The Island in the Cafeteria

The Lincoln Elementary cafeteria was a sensory assault, a deafening warzone of flying tater tots, spilled chocolate milk, and the high-pitched shrieks of two hundred children freed from their classrooms. Yet, in the dead center of this chaos, ten-year-old Leo sat marooned on an invisible, impenetrable island. He was bound to a heavy, institutional wheelchair, a permanent reality since the brutal car accident six months ago that had shattered his legs and his childhood. The cold metal spokes felt less like a mobility aid and more like the iron bars of a cage keeping him separate from the world. Today was his tenth birthday. There were no brightly colored balloons tied to his chair, no chorus of off-key singing, no friends fighting over who got the corner piece of cake. There was only a scratched plastic tray, a pile of lukewarm, rubbery chicken nuggets he couldn't stomach, and a single, pathetic vanilla cupcake he had purchased that morning with his own crumpled dollar bills. He stared blankly at the unlit, striped candle resting crookedly on the cheap, waxy icing. The sheer, crushing weight of his loneliness pressed down on his small chest, making it hard to breathe. In a room overflowing with vibrant, chaotic life, Leo had never felt more like a ghost.
