Chapter 9 - The Impossible Light

Suddenly, with a loud, electrical clack, the harsh, buzzing fluorescent lights of the entire cafeteria flickered twice and died completely. The massive room was plunged into an eerie, sudden twilight, followed instantly by a collective, nervous gasp from two hundred students. The chaotic noise dropped to a dead, echoing silence. Then, a warm, golden, flickering glow began to spill out from beneath the kitchen doors. Leo, sensing the shift in the air, slowly lifted his heavy head from his arms. Emerging from the darkness was Mrs. Hayes, her face illuminated from below, carrying a gigantic, beautiful sheet cake absolutely blazing with a dozen tall candles. The neon colors of the icing dripped down the sides like liquid, vibrant joy. She was walking with incredible purpose, moving straight toward his isolated corner. The entire cafeteria remained dead silent, mesmerized, watching as she gently, reverently placed the magnificent, glowing cake directly onto his tray. Leo’s breath hitched violently in his throat. He stared at the flames, completely unable to process the impossible shift in reality.
