Chapter 5 - The Cruelest Theft

Mrs. Hayes moved with a sudden, terrifyingly predatory purpose. She marched across the scuffed linoleum floor, her face an unreadable mask of stone, cutting through the crowd like a ship through water. Leo, lost in his grief, didn't notice her approach until her heavy shadow fell completely over his tray, plunging his small flame into darkness. He looked up, his eyes red, swollen, and wide with confusion, the Polaroid still clutched desperately to his chest. Mrs. Hayes didn't offer a single word of comfort. She didn't pat his shoulder. Instead, her eyes darted to the photo of the smiling soldier, then snapped down to the sad, lit cupcake. In one swift, violently shocking motion, she snatched the cupcake right off his tray, extinguishing the candle with a pinch of her fingers. Leo gasped, the sound catching in his throat, completely paralyzed by the sudden aggression. He watched in absolute, unadulterated horror as she pivoted on her heel, walked directly over to the industrial trash bin, and ruthlessly dumped his only birthday treat into the garbage. His heart didn't just break; it shattered into a million irreparable pieces. The world had just reached into his chest and stolen the absolute last shred of light he had left.
