Chapter 3 - The Watcher in Green

Three tables away, the chaotic white noise of the lunchroom faded entirely for Sam. Sam, a profoundly quiet kid in a faded green t-shirt who had learned early in life that observing was safer than speaking, simply couldn’t tear his eyes away from the boy in the wheelchair. He watched the entire, heartbreaking scene unfold with cinematic clarity: the agonizing self-applause, the silent, heaving sobs, the desperate, white-knuckled grip on the worn photograph. While the rest of the school remained painfully, ignorantly oblivious to Leo’s quiet agony, Sam felt a thick knot of injustice tighten painfully in his stomach. His heart hammered against his ribs. He couldn't just sit there and eat his sandwich. The cruelty of a boy forced to cry entirely alone on his birthday was a blaring, silent alarm ringing relentlessly in Sam's head. He knew what it was like to be invisible, but this was a different kind of tragedy entirely.
