Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Polaroid

With fingers trembling so violently he could barely hold the cardboard matchbook, Leo finally managed to strike a match. The tiny, fragile flame flared to life, casting long, dancing, desperately sad shadows across his pale, sunken cheeks. He leaned in and began to sing Happy Birthday to himself, his voice a broken, trembling whisper entirely swallowed by the cafeteria's roar. When he finished the solitary verse, he began to clap slowly, the hollow sound echoing only in his own ears. The dam finally broke; hot, stinging tears spilled over his lower lids, tracing rapid paths down his face and dripping onto his blue shirt. From the depths of his pocket, he pulled out his most prized possession: a creased, faded Polaroid photograph. It showed him standing tall and proud on his own two strong legs, beaming next to a towering man in crisp army fatigues—his father, Sergeant First Class Miller. “I promise I’ll be home for the big one-zero, buddy. Count on it,” his dad had sworn on the porch, hoisting Leo into the air just hours before a sudden, classified deployment to a hostile black-ops zone. That was seven months ago. The promise was broken. Leo smiled a shattered, devastated smile through his tears at the photograph, clinging to the glossy paper as if it were a life raft in a dark ocean.
