Chapter 4 - The Whisper of Intervention

Driven by an intense, overriding impulse he didn't quite understand but couldn't ignore, Sam abandoned his untouched lunch. He navigated the treacherous maze of sticky tables and darting children until he reached the dominion of Mrs. Hayes. The stern, intimidating cafeteria manager was monitoring the room with her arms tightly crossed, a terrifying figure of absolute authority. Sam hesitated for a fraction of a second before tugging urgently at the hem of her beige cardigan. When she looked down, her brow furrowed in immediate annoyance at the interruption, Sam didn't utter a single word. He couldn't find the voice for it. He just pointed a rigid, trembling finger toward the isolated corner table. Mrs. Hayes’s sharp eyes followed his gesture, tracking across the sea of heads until she locked onto Leo. Her annoyance vanished instantly, replaced by a dark, intensely calculating gaze as she took in the full, devastating picture: the weeping boy, the wheelchair, the military photo, and the solitary, flickering cupcake. The very atmosphere around her seemed to shift and crackle.
