Chapter 10 - The Echoes of a Promise

"Happy birthday, brave boy," Mrs. Hayes whispered, her voice thick with emotion, tears shining brightly in her usually hard eyes. But before Leo could even begin to process her words or formulate a thank you, a heavy, unmistakable set of scuffed desert combat boots stepped into the pool of candlelight from the shadows behind Mrs. Hayes. A tall, broad-shouldered figure in dust-covered camouflage leaned down. Strong, rough, infinitely familiar arms wrapped tightly around Leo’s small, shaking shoulders, pulling him back against a solid chest that smelled intensely of jet fuel, sweat, and home. "I told you I'd make it for the big one-zero, buddy," his father’s deep, rumbling voice vibrated through Leo's back.

Leo let out a sound that was half-gasp, half-scream, bursting into loud, ugly, uncontrollable tears of pure, unadulterated euphoria. He twisted in his chair, burying his face deep into his father’s uniform as the entire cafeteria finally broke the silence, erupting into a deafening, thunderous roar of cheers and applause. Surrounded by the noise and the light, father and son leaned in together and blew out the candles.

The Epilogue As the sweet, sulfurous smoke from the extinguished candles cleared into the air and Leo laughed for the first time in months, his face smeared with frosting, Sergeant Miller smiled a smile of pure relief. He stroked his son's hair, breathing him in. But over Leo’s shoulder, hidden in the shadows, the soldier's heavily encrypted tactical smartwatch vibrated aggressively against his wrist, a sharp, mechanical rhythm against his pulse. He casually slipped his hand down to glance at the screen. A new, classified message glowed in stark, blood-red letters: “EXTRACTION COMPROMISED. HIGH VALUE TARGET ESCAPED. REPORT TO BASE IMMEDIATELY. NO EXCEPTIONS.” Miller looked down at his joyful, shattered son, then back to the glowing red text on his wrist, the warm smile slowly, inevitably fading from his eyes as the cold, violent shadows of a war far away reached across the world to pull him right back into the dark.
