Chapter 10 : Marcus had been trying to retrain Vittorio through Lucy.

Marcus had been trying to retrain Vittorio through Lucy.
That was the major truth beneath the entire scheme.
For almost two years, Marcus had complained privately that fatherhood changed the way Vittorio led the Romano family.
Vittorio no longer allowed late-night council sessions when Lucy was home.
He canceled a three-day trip because she had pneumonia.
He once postponed a meeting with senior associates to attend her kindergarten orientation.
To Vittorio, these were ordinary decisions.
To Marcus, they were evidence that the boss had become emotionally controllable.
The problem, in Marcus’s mind, was not Lucy.
It was the fact that Lucy could reach Vittorio.
So when Bianca became engaged to him, Marcus saw an opportunity.
Bianca wanted to become the unquestioned woman of Vittorio’s household.
She resented how quickly Lucy could redirect his attention.
Marcus told her that if she could establish authority over Lucy before the wedding, Vittorio would eventually appreciate it.
Then he designed the system.
Move council meetings into breakfast.
Close the door.
Intercept staff complaints.
Make Lucy wait rather than run to her father.
Punish crying.
Separate adult meals from child meals.
Gradually teach Lucy that distress would no longer bring Vittorio.
At the same time, teach Vittorio that council meetings could continue without interruption.
Marcus called it consistency.
His private notes called it something else.
Break response loop.
That phrase appeared six times.
Lucy cried.
Vittorio responded.
Marcus considered that a loop.
He wanted it broken.
The dog bowl was not part of his original written plan.
Bianca escalated there herself.
But Marcus did not stop her.
He laughed.
Closed the door.
Then tried to seize Emma’s phone when proof appeared.
The three clues from the beginning finally made complete sense.
Marcus repeatedly scheduled early meetings because Vittorio’s absence was intentional.
Emma’s complaints disappeared because staff resistance threatened the experiment.
And Marcus closed the breakfast-room door not for privacy, but to stop Lucy’s cries from reaching her father.
The goal had never been only to control a child.
It was to train a Mafia boss not to answer his daughter.
Bianca had her own motive.
She wanted a marriage where she was not competing with a five-year-old for authority and attention.
Marcus used that insecurity.
He convinced her cruelty was discipline and that results would protect the engagement.
But Bianca knew Vittorio would reject the methods.
Her own messages proved it.
She participated because she wanted the outcome badly enough to hide the process.
Vittorio sat in Leah’s office after the findings were explained.
For a long time, he said nothing.
Then:
“He thought loving my daughter made me weak.”
Leah waited.
Vittorio looked toward the window.
“And I gave him enough authority to test that theory on her.”
That was the part Marcus had never written down.

The experiment required a house where people obeyed rank before asking whether the order was right.
Vittorio had built that house himself.
