Chapter 3 : The household review began with breakfast.

The household review began with breakfast.

Not Bianca’s jewelry.

Not Marcus’s finances.

Breakfast.

Vittorio ordered every meal note, nanny instruction, staff schedule, disciplinary request, and household memo involving Lucy for the previous three months preserved.

The first pattern appeared quickly.

On mornings Vittorio ate with Lucy, almost nothing happened.

On mornings he entered the adjoining council room before breakfast ended, complaints multiplied.

Lucy refused instructions.

Lucy interrupted.

Lucy spilled something.

Lucy became “overstimulated.”

Lucy was removed from the table.

Most notes were written by staff after Bianca instructed them to document the behavior.

None described Bianca’s response.

That omission bothered Vittorio.

A child’s behavior had become record-worthy.

The adult reaction had not.

Then he examined his own calendar.

Over the past eight weeks, Marcus had moved nine council meetings earlier.

Seven began between 7:30 and 8:15 a.m.

Exactly when Lucy ate breakfast.

Vittorio called his scheduler.

“Why were these moved?”

“Mr. Hale said morning meetings were more efficient.”

“Did I ask for that?”

“No.”

“Did I approve?”

“You accepted the calendar invites.”

Technically true.

Vittorio had seen earlier start times and assumed business required them.

He never asked why.

Another small clue.

Marcus was not merely present during Bianca’s treatment of Lucy.

He had repeatedly arranged for Vittorio not to be.

The breakfast room door mattered too.

Emma’s video showed Marcus closing it after Bianca brought out the dog bowl.

Security logs showed the same door had been closed during four earlier breakfasts.

House staff normally left it open.

Why close it?

Marcus’s attorney later offered an innocent explanation.

Privacy.

The council room was nearby.

They did not want household noise disturbing meetings.

Vittorio almost believed it.

Then a housekeeper remembered Marcus saying something else one morning.

“Keep the kid in there until she stops calling for him.”

For him.

Not for anyone.

For Vittorio.

The cruelty was beginning to look less like spontaneous punishment.

Someone was trying to break a specific habit.

Lucy calling for her father.
