Chapter 14 : Six months later, Lucy returned to the breakfast room willingly.

Six months later, Lucy returned to the breakfast room willingly.
That had taken time.
For weeks she ate in the kitchen.
Then the sunroom.
Then beside Vittorio in his study.
Dr. Bell warned against turning avoidance into a permanent accommodation.
“The room did not hurt her.”
“I know.”
“Then eventually it needs to become ordinary again.”
So one Saturday morning, Lucy chose to try.
Vittorio did not stage anything.
No balloons.
No special breakfast.
No dramatic speech about bravery.
Pancakes.
Fruit.
Milk.
Emma stood near the kitchen door.
She had decided to remain through the end of the school year and then enroll in a nursing program she had postponed.
Vittorio paid the education benefit already included in senior household contracts.
Nothing extra disguised as gratitude.
Lucy climbed into her chair.
Then looked under the table.
The pet feeding mat was gone.
Not hidden.
Moved to the actual dog-feeding area in the mudroom where it belonged.
Lucy pointed.
“Where’s Bruno’s bowl?”
“Where Bruno eats.”
“Not here?”
“No.”
She sat.
Emma brought pancakes.
Lucy ate half.
Then stopped.
Vittorio’s body tensed automatically.
Dr. Bell’s instructions came back to him.
Do not turn eating into a test.
“Done?” he asked.
Lucy nodded.
“Okay.”
That was all.
No clean plate requirement.
No praise for eating.
No fear when she stopped.
Lucy slid down from the chair.
Then hesitated at the door to the council room.
“Can I go in?”
Vittorio looked at the clock.
A meeting was starting in five minutes.
The old instinct was to say yes because denying anything felt dangerous now.
The healthier answer was harder.
“Not during the meeting.”
Lucy’s face fell slightly.
“But when I finish, I’ll come find you.”
“Promise?”
“Yes.”
She looked at him.
Then nodded.
Vittorio entered the council room.
He stayed for forty minutes.
Lucy did not cry outside.
He did not interpret that as victory.
When the meeting ended, he did exactly what he promised.
He found her.
That was the new response loop.

Not instant rescue.
