Chapter 9 : Forensic staff reconstructed the pattern.
Forensic staff reconstructed the pattern.
Marcus moved Vittorio into early meetings.
Bianca controlled breakfast.
Complaints from staff were routed away from Vittorio.
The breakfast-room door closed whenever Lucy began crying.
If Lucy attempted to reach the council room, Bianca or Marcus intercepted her.
Afterward, Vittorio was told she had eaten normally.
Then came something even more revealing.
Marcus kept private meeting notes.
Most were ordinary.
Dates.
Capos.
Decisions.
At the bottom of several pages appeared unrelated observations.
L—came to door 8:14.
L cried 6 min. B held line.
No interruption today.
V stayed full meeting. Good.
Leah stared at the entries.
“This is tracking.”
Vittorio did not answer.
Another page:
B gave in after 4 min. Need consistency.
B.
Bianca.
She had apparently let Lucy leave the breakfast room once.
Marcus criticized her for it.
The dynamic shifted.
Marcus was not simply helping his sister.
He was supervising her.
Then Bianca’s messages filled in the emotional side.
BIANCA: I hate when she screams for him like I’m hurting her.
MARCUS: Then stop reacting emotionally.
BIANCA: She makes me feel cruel.
MARCUS: She’s five. You’re the adult. Finish what you start.
Another:
BIANCA: Vittorio will leave me if he sees this wrong.
MARCUS: He’ll thank you when she stops running his life.**
Vittorio read that sentence slowly.
Bianca knew he would object if he saw what she was doing.
That destroyed any claim she believed she had his approval.
She had continued anyway because Marcus promised the result would justify the method.
Leah looked at him.
“Marcus appears to be the architect.”
Vittorio shook his head.
“Bianca still put the bowl down.”
“Yes.”
“I’m not turning her into his victim.”
“No.”
That mattered.
Marcus influenced her.
Bianca chose cruelty.
Both could be true.

The next set of files revealed what Marcus believed all of it was supposed to accomplish.
And the answer was larger than breakfast.
