Chapter 6 : Vittorio confronted no one.

Vittorio confronted no one.

That surprised everyone.

Old Vittorio would have summoned Marcus into a locked room.

He did not.

Leah had told him something he was beginning to understand.

“Every private confrontation gives them another chance to reshape the story.”

So he stopped giving them private rooms.

The investigation moved through attorneys, child-welfare professionals, police, and independent forensic staff.

That structure produced a new witness.

Maria Kent, a former weekend nanny.

Bianca fired her two months earlier.

Official reason:

Poor boundary enforcement.

Actual reason, according to Maria:

“I kept letting Lucy into her father’s study.”

Vittorio stared at the statement.

Maria described a Saturday when Lucy woke from a nightmare and ran downstairs looking for him.

Vittorio was in a business meeting.

Maria intended to wait outside the study with Lucy.

Marcus intercepted them.

He told Maria:

“If Vittorio sees her crying, he’ll stop the meeting.”

Maria replied:

“She’s five.”

Marcus answered:

“That’s exactly the problem.”

He took Lucy upstairs himself.

Maria followed.

Marcus told Bianca the child needed to learn that “the world doesn’t stop because she’s upset.”

Bianca made Lucy sit alone in the nursery for twenty minutes.

Maria opened the door.

Bianca fired her two days later.

Another pattern.

The goal was not merely obedience.

It was making sure Lucy’s distress did not alter Vittorio’s behavior.

That mattered because Vittorio had changed over the previous several years.

He ended meetings earlier.

Skipped late dinners.

Rejected travel that kept him away too long.

He had become a father before he became a boss in certain decisions.

Some relatives admired it.

Others did not.

Marcus belonged to the second group.

One capo finally admitted it.

“Marcus has complained you’re getting soft.”

Vittorio looked at him.

“How long?”

“Since Lucy started school.”

“What did you say?”

“Nothing.”

“Why?”

The capo shrugged.

“He wasn’t completely wrong.”

Vittorio leaned back.

There it was.

Not simply Bianca’s jealousy.

A larger family belief.

Lucy’s access to her father was supposedly weakening him.

Marcus had found a future wife willing to turn that belief into household policy.
