Chapter 12 : Emma nearly resigned. Vittorio learned through her attorney.

Emma nearly resigned.

Vittorio learned through her attorney.

He asked for one meeting.

Emma agreed only with counsel present.

That humbled him.

She sat across from him in a plain conference room.

Not his study.

Not the estate.

“You want to leave?”

“I don’t know.”

“Why?”

Emma looked surprised by the question.

Then answered.

“Because I keep thinking about how long I waited.”

“You tried to tell me.”

“Not enough.”

“You recorded it.”

“After weeks.”

Vittorio sat back.

“I’m not going to make you carry what Bianca and Marcus did.”

Emma looked down.

“That sounds nice.”

“It’s true.”

“You’re still my employer.”

That stopped him.

Power again.

Even reassurance sounded different when spoken by the man who signed her paycheck.

So Vittorio changed the offer.

“You don’t have to decide now. You’ll receive severance if you leave. No nondisclosure agreement about Lucy’s treatment. No retaliation. If you stay, your reporting line changes away from family management.”

Emma looked at her lawyer.

Then at Vittorio.

“What about Lucy?”

“She’ll be told you can leave because adults change jobs. Not because she did anything.”

Emma’s eyes filled.

That was the sentence she needed.

She stayed temporarily.

Not from loyalty to Vittorio.

Because Lucy asked whether Emma would still make pancakes on Saturdays.

Vittorio did not romanticize it.

He knew affection between employee and child required boundaries too.

The larger legal process continued.

Child-welfare findings substantiated degrading and emotionally harmful treatment by Bianca.

Marcus’s participation was documented.

The attempted destruction or seizure of evidence, interference with staff reporting, and related conduct were reviewed separately.

Vittorio’s own use of force that morning was reviewed as well.

Footage showed Marcus lunging at Emma’s phone and Bianca reaching toward Lucy immediately after the abuse was exposed.

That context mattered.

It did not create unlimited permission.

Vittorio cooperated.

For once, he refused to decide for everyone whether his violence had been justified.
