Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Heir

Two weeks later, the morning sun shone over the calm, pristine waters of Lake Zurich.
The private banking district was quiet, populated only by impeccably tailored financiers and silent armored vehicles.
Arthur Hawthorne sat inside the soundproofed basement vault of the Bank of Helvetia, wearing a bespoke charcoal suit.
Across the heavy steel table sat Agent Maya Thorne, dressed in professional civilian attire, looking completely recovered from her injuries.
Between them rested a polished brass deposit box bearing the engraved number: 741.
Beside the box was the Hawthorne Star, its Fifty-carat Burmese sapphire completely restored to its original platinum setting.
"Are you sure you want to open this, Arthur?" Thorne asked gently, watching his steady hands.
"I need to know who I am, Maya," Arthur replied, his voice calm, resolute, and mature.
He took the small silver key he had recovered from Julian’s private residence and inserted it into the dual-lock mechanism.
The vault official turned the master key simultaneously, bowed respectfully, and exited the room, sealing the heavy door behind him.
Arthur lifted the heavy brass lid.
Inside rested a single leather-bound journal and a sealed Manila envelope labeled with his late father's signature: *Richard Hawthorne.*
Arthur picked up the envelope, breaking the red wax seal with an ivory letter opener.
Unfolding the heavy parchment inside, Arthur’s eyes scanned the legal document.
It was an official genetic paternity report from Johns Hopkins Hospital, dated twenty-eight years ago.
Arthur read the conclusion, his breath catching in his throat.
*Probability of Paternity between Richard Hawthorne and Arthur Hawthorne: 99.98%.*
Arthur let out a long, trembling breath that felt like releasing two weeks of suffocating poison.
"Julian lied," Arthur whispered, a faint, genuine smile finally breaking across his face.
"Or Kaelen lied with her dying breath just to break you one last time," Thorne suggested, leaning forward with relief in her eyes.
"She almost succeeded," Arthur admitted, looking at the document that restored his identity.
He set the paternity test aside and opened the leather journal beneath it.
Inside was Richard Hawthorne’s handwritten handwriting, detailing every shipment, every deal, and every betrayal within the family dynasty.
Arthur turned to the final entry, dated three days before his father’s murder.
*If you are reading this, Arthur, it means my brother Julian has made his move.*
*Do not weep for me, my son. Weep for the world they tried to build in the dark.*
*I leave you the empire not to preserve our wealth, but to dismantle the corruption that built it.*
*Be better than me, Artie. Be the man your mother believed you could be.*
Arthur closed the journal, the heavy leather cover settling with a satisfying thud against the steel table.
He looked across at Agent Thorne, his flint-gray eyes reflecting the diamond facets of the restored sapphire.
"What happens to Julian?" Arthur asked.
"He was indicted on forty-two federal counts this morning, including conspiracy to commit murder and treason," Thorne answered.
"He will spend the rest of his natural life inside a supermax facility in Colorado," she added.
"And my grandmother?"
"She has officially transferred all voting shares and executive control to you," Thorne said, tapping a folder on the table.
Arthur picked up the Hawthorne Star, feeling the cool, heavy weight of the sapphire against his skin.
The heirloom had brought bloodshed, deception, and the near-destruction of his family.
"This jewel represents a century of blood money," Arthur said, holding it up to the recessed vault lighting.
"What will you do with it?" Thorne asked, curious.
Arthur smiled, a cold, confident expression that signaled the dawn of a new era for his family.
"I’m selling it at Sotheby’s next week," Arthur declared firmly.
"And the proceeds?"
"Every single dollar is going to the families of the victims of my father’s black-market shipments," Arthur stated without hesitation.
Thorne looked at the young billionaire, her respect for him cementing into something profound and lasting.
"And what will you do with the company, Mr. Hawthorne?" she asked, leaning back in her chair.
Arthur stood up, buttoning his jacket, the posture of a grieving boy completely replaced by that of a sovereign titan.
"I’m going to clean it from the inside out," Arthur replied, his voice commanding and clear.
"Starting today, Hawthorne International doesn't operate in the shadows."
He extended his hand across the table toward the agent who had saved his life.
"Thank you, Agent Thorne. For everything."
Maya Thorne took his hand, her grip firm, professional, and warm.
"If you ever need an operative who doesn't wear a mask, Arthur, you know where to find me," she said with a knowing smile.
Arthur turned and walked out of the vault into the bright Zurich sunlight, breathing in the clean, mountain air.
The wedding that was meant to destroy him had stripped away his illusions, his weakness, and his naivety.

He was no longer a victim of the Hawthorne legacy.
He was its master.
